Show #687

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 4th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

UK PLANS TO BAN NEW INTERNAL-COMBUSTION CARS BY 2035

"A ban on the sale of new gasoline, diesel, and even hybrid cars could go into effect in the UK as soon as 2035, under a new proposal by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. That deadline is five years earlier than previously planned." reports Autoblog: "The UK government in 2018 said it planned to outlaw the sale of gasoline and diesel new cars and vans starting in 2040, but that proposal still permitted ultra-low-emissions hybrids. The new proposal not only moves the date five years closer, it permits only zero-emissions vehicles."

"Interestingly, the UK’s upcoming ban actually includes hybrid vehicles, which have long been promoted by veteran carmakers as “electrified” cars. Yet save for plug-in hybrids, which can be charged from an EV charging station, hybrids like the Toyota Prius still use petrol as their sole source of fuel." is how Teslarati sees it: "With hybrid cars now a part of the ICE ban because of their need for petrol, the UK will be focusing on pushing pure electric cars."

The Telegraph newspaper said: "Britain’s biggest car maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and other luxury UK auto firms will be among the biggest victims of a ban on diesel and petrol sales by 2035, analysts fear. Experts said that JLR is seriously exposed as profits depend on the large SUVs produced by its Land Rover arm, which outsell Jaguar models by three to one. It is understood that executives at the firm had no advance warning of Government plans to bring forward a ban on diesel and petrol sales from 2040 to 2035. Moving the deadline could also mean car companies writing off earlier investment in hybrid technology."

David Greenwood, professor of advanced propulsion at Warwick University, said: “It’s very difficult to deliver big and heavy cars, like full-size SUVs, which are fully electric and have the long range that people expect.”

According to BBC News: "The change in plans, which will be subject to a consultation, comes after experts warned the previous target date of 2040 would still leave old conventional cars on the roads following the clean-up date of 2050."

And finally from Thisismoney.co.uk: "However, the inclusion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles - marketed until now as green models - might have come as quite a shock to some, especially the manufacturers who have heavily invested in their development and the UK motorists who've already paid a premium to buy one. What came as more of a shock was the decision to also outlaw hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars from that date too, meaning those that run on a combination of petrol or diesel and electricity will also be drummed out of showrooms in 15 year's time. A decision to remove financial incentives to help motorists buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) at the end of 2018 was the first signal that the government might turn its back on hybrid technology."

FORD ENGINEER TALKS MACH-E SPECS

"A Ford engineer hosted an “ask me anything” (AMA) thread on Reddit over the weekend.  In it, they let us in on a few new bits of information about the car (including battery and charging specs), and talked about his opinion of it, particularly in comparison to the Tesla Model Y, which will target a similar market as the Mach-E." writes Electrek: "The engineer was less complimentary of Tesla’s manufacturing capabilities.  While they had great things to say about Tesla’s battery and motor engineering (which “outpaces the industry by 5yrs easy”)The Mach-E has a face camera in the steering wheel cluster which will be used for future autonomous driving purposes.  It will be able to detect whether or not the driver is in the seat and paying attention to the road.  The engineer suggests that this will be better than Tesla’s “autopilot nag” warnings which require steering wheel movement every once in a while, allowing a “more natural experience and you can rest your arms.” Also, the Mach-E’s cluster will be capable of side-by-side displays of both Ford’s “sync” infotainment system and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto."

PRODUCTION AT GIGAFACTORY TURNS PROFITABLE

"Panasonic reports an increase in automotive battery sales (sadly there are no detailed numbers for the subcategory). The main factor is an increase of 21700 cylindrical cell type sales/production in North America at the Tesla Gigafactory. The production lines for Tesla are now profitable not only on a monthly basis, but for the entire Q4 2019." says InsideEVs: "On the other hand, cylindrical cells produced in Japan (the 18650 type), for cars like the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, continue to decrease. The decrease affected also prismatic batteries in North America."

NORWAY SOLD 4,236 NEW ELECTRIC CARS IN JANUARY

"4,236 electric cars were newly registered in Norway in the first month of the new year. The market share of BEV in passenger car registrations was thus 44.3%. By far the most popular model across all drive systems was the Audi e-tron." writes electrive: "The 3,270 hybrid passenger cars included 1,919 plug-in hybrids.  If both types of drive are added together, 78.5 per cent of all newly registered passenger cars in Norway in December were thus equipped with an electric or plug-in hybrid drive."
