CHINA SUSPENDS FURTHER ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUBSIDY CUTS
"Beijing is suspending its plan to completely remove electric vehicle purchase subsidies this year, China’s chief minster of industry said on Saturday, as the government moves to stem further collapse spurred by the large-scale cuts which began in June." reports Technode.com: "The move is a big positive for the industry, and is expected to calm the market and preempt widepread bankruptcies throughout the EV industry. China’s sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) dropped 6% year on year to 1.2 million units in 2019, the first decline in 10 years since Beijing began providing incentives on EV purchases, according to government figures. NEVs include fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid EVs, and fuel cell EVs.China had initially planned a schedule of subsidy reductions each year beginning in 2016 to conclude with complete elimination of EV subsidies after 2020, reported Bloomberg, which all reductions, including the most recent in June, adhered to. The June cuts reduced by half subsidies from 2018, bringing the discount on an EV with an estimated 400 kilometer range to RMB 25,000 (roughly $3,625), for example."

Meanwhile Reuters adds: "Automakers who stand to benefit include Tesla (TSLA.O), which started making deliveries from its $2-billion Shanghai plant this month and secured NEV subsidies in December, Warren Buffett-backed Chinese electric car maker BYD (002594.SZ) as well as aspiring Tesla-challenger Nio Inc (NIO.N)."
PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S IS NEW LEAST-EFFICIENT EV
"The EPA rating for the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S has been posted to fueleconomy.gov, and the results aren’t all that pretty. The Taycan is rated at just 68 MPGe with 192 miles of range, despite the car’s large 93 kWh battery." according to electrek: "While not a big drop from the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo S and its higher power delivery resulted in 1 less MPGe, and 9 miles less range than the Turbo’s 69 MPGe and 201 miles.This rating puts the car at the bottom of the heap for current electric vehicle efficiency. It is the least-efficient electric vehicle currently available in the US, taking the spot previously held by the Taycan Turbo. It is less efficient than large electric SUV/crossovers like the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X."
TESLA FILED MODEL Y CERTIFICATION PAPERS
"According to Twitter user Alter Viggo, on January 9, Tesla filed certification papers with the California Air Resources Board for the Model Y. Why is that news? Because in 2017, Tesla began delivering Model 3 sedans to customers 25 days after it filed similar certification papers for the Model 3 with CARB." says Teslarati: "Twitter used Ryan McCaffery added this useful tidbit: “We already know that there will be Founders Series Y’s (there weren’t any Founders 3’s), and that those Founders cars are Performance models. So the fact that this listing is for PY does corroborate your hypothesis.” In other words, this may be for just a select few Model Ys (which could be hand built), while real production and deliveries commence in subsequent months or quarters."
AMAZON ALREADY HAS ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS
"Ben Sullins (Teslanomics) recently posted a short video clip on Twitter showing what appeared to be an all-electric Ford Transit Amazon delivery van. It actually said 100 percent electric on the vehicle itself. Sean Mitchell took notice, only to learn that the conversion was performed by a company near him that he'd previously visited." picks up InsideEVs: "The Colorado-based company — Lightning Systems — converts Class 3 to Class 8 diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles to fully electric. "

SMOG IN SOUTHERN EUROPE SPARKS CAR BANS AND STREET PROTESTS
"Cities across southern Europe are experiencing dangerously high levels of smog caused by a prolonged period of dry sunny weather and light winds." according to BBC News: "Temporary bans on diesel vehicles have been ordered in major Italian cities, including the capital, Rome, in an effort to reduce the pollution. In Rome, diesel cars, vans and motorbikes have been banned during peak times, while other polluting vehicles have been banned altogether. The restrictions, which are set to remain in place over the next three days, are expected to affect about one million vehicles."

700,000 TOYOTAS AND LEXUSES NAMED IN FUEL PUMP RECALL
And finally from Autoblog: "In an announcement posted to its corporate press room, Toyota made known a voluntary safety recall on select 2018 and 2019 Toyota and Lexus models. The recall includes roughly 696,000 vehicles and deals with a fuel pump that might stop working. An internal investigation into the issue is under way."
