Show #656

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA ROLLS OUT PORTABLE SUPERCHARGERS From TMC user Remonster: "We rolled up to this at the San Luis Obispo, CA Supercharger station which is critical station for 101 travelers going up or down the central coast. I was expecting it to be an absolute zoo the day before Thanksgiving but to my surprise they had a mobile Supercharging station putting out 120+kW to I think 8 Urban Chargers. They had a couple of Tesla engineers on site to help monitor. One of them was kind enough to stand in the rain and help plug in/unplug cars.

They said this was their first time testing it and they rolled it in all the way from Reno to augment this particular station. They expect it to be used for the recent PG&E power shutoffs and general emergency situations. They also said it has a 12hr charge time, but I didn't ask at what amperage. I didn't get an exact number for kWh but he mentioned 60-80 cars can be charged in total. They had already charged 40-50 cars that day. The rush was certainly slowing down when I showed up, but all stalls (including stationary ones) were full for a solid 30 minutes. Longest que I saw was 3 cars."

From BjornJ: "I used this to charge on Wednesday night driving from the Bay Area to LA. It started charging at about 120kw, so not really a normal urban charger. I also chatted with the Tesla Energy employees while charging. You don’t need to be on the truck bed to unhook the cable, just lift by the cable."

From @Cactus_capital In Shanghai this week. Went to #Tesla Store to check out MIC #Model3. Was told each of the 7 store in Shanghai area are getting ~40 new orders/day which exceeds the current GF3 capacity. A order placed today would be delivered in late January. Here is a close look of fit/finish. Also as of now all MIC Model 3 are using imported Panasonic cells but soon will switch to Chinese battery suppliers"

TESLA MODEL 3 IS 2020 CAR OF THE YEAR IN DENMARK! "The association of Danish Motor Journalists has officially named the Tesla Model 3 the car of the year in Denmark 2020! The Model 3 has been tested and talked about a lot in the respected legacy conservative magazine Motor from the Danish Motorist Association (FDM), but they have been critical and skeptica" says CleanTechnica: "The Tesla Model 3 is a natural winner of the Car of the Year in Denmark 2020. It is an electric car that has revolutionized the car world in many ways, because Tesla has managed to make a fun and well-equipped electric car with long range, good driving characteristics, and high safety, as we have come to expect from Tesla.”

AUDI UPGRADES E-TRON ELECTRIC SUV WITH MORE RANGE AND EFFICIENCY "Audi has just unveiled its e-tron Sportback, which is a little more efficient than the e-tron SUV, but now the German automaker has introduced some upgrades to the e-tron electric SUV — giving it more range and efficiency." writes Electrek: "Today, Audi confirmed it with new upgrades to the e-tron resulting in an extra 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of WLTP range for both versions of the vehicle (Audi e-tron 50 and 55).

The automaker explains the changes leading to improved efficiency:

Thanks to a new type of wheel brake, the developers have achieved further reductions in what is known as residual brake torque. This refers to losses that occur as a result of the proximity of the brake calipers to the brake discs. The drive system has also become more efficient. In normal driving, the motor on the rear axle provides propulsion as standard. Now, thanks to a number of optimizations, the front electric motor is almost entirely disengaged and disconnected from the electricity supply."

That should get the e-tron 55 from 204 to 215 miles on the EPA cycle

Audi also announced a few other improvements to the e-tron electric SUV:

Highly efficient thermal management - thermal management system, which comprises four separate circuits, has been revised and now regulates the temperature of the high-voltage components even more efficiently. Improved coasting recuperation

TESLA WARNS ON TAX CREDIT "Tesla sent out a warning email this week that the federal tax credit for buying an electric vehicle will expire for good for Tesla EVs in less than five weeks." says Forbes: "For the second half of 2019, the tax credits for Tesla EVs were just $1,875. And this is the amount that goes away entirely at the end of December, so any Tesla that gets ordered this year but delivered in 2020 will not qualify. GM EV’s are still in the $1,875 zone, and they will remain there until the end of March 2020. Some states also offer incentives for EV buyers, and you can find the details for Tesla EVs here. And this is the text of the email that Tesla sent out this week:

In less than 5 weeks, the federal tax credit will be expiring and purchases of a new Model S, Model X or Model 3 will no longer be eligible for this incentive. Order online in less than three minutes and experience the ease, convenience and safety of an all-electric design.

Place your order and take delivery by December 31, 2019 to be eligible for the federal tax credit. Orders placed near the end of the year are not guaranteed to be delivered by December 31.

Any purchase of a Model S or Model X will also come with free Supercharging."

TESLA MODEL 3 MID-RANGE TO SUPERCHARGE AT UP TO 200 KW "We have a confirmation that Tesla's new over-the-air updates unlocked higher Supercharging power rates not only for the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (to 170 kW), but also for the Mid-Range version too." says InsideEVs following up a story that first appeared on 5th Nov: "After the update, both models are now also able to fully utilize V2 Supercharging stations, that in most cases should be able to deliver up to 150 kW (some sites are limied to lower power). The update potentially might be worth up to a quarter of an hour less time when charging from 20-80%. The full 250 kW rate at V3 Superchargers so far can be utilized only by the top of the line Long Range Model 3 versions, and only for a short part of charging process."

VW CAN HOLD EV PRICING AFTER CREDITS " Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh laid out a broader unifying theory of the German automaker's pricing plans for its coming lineup of electric vehicles, saying that the company believes its huge global scale will be able to absorb the loss of federal tax credits for EV buyers to keep net consumer prices stable." reports Automotive News Europe: "Speaking on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Auto Show, Keogh reiterated that the net pricing after tax credits for what will be the brand's first MEB-based EV in the U.S. — a compact crossover coming next year that is to be called the ID4 — would be in the "sweet spot" for the segment, likely in the low- to mid-$30,000 range."

Scott Keogh estimated that Volkswagen brand dealers would enjoy the benefit of the $7,500 tax credit for "about two years" before Volkswagen Group — including Audi and Porsche sales — would exhaust the 200,000 federal tax credits available. Those early tax credits, Keogh argued, give the automaker "a little bit of breathing room" on pricing early in the life cycle of the new ID family of EVs.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…

"The controversial, and botched, Cybertruck launch is now the most-Googled search term in the companies history. But did it help or hinder the wider movement to EVs?”
