Show #590

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 24th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

NEW RESEARCH PROMISES ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES THAT LAST FOR A MILLION MILES

From Gizmodo, one of the many publications to pick up on this new/old news: "Electric motors guzzle electricity, which can be especially hard on a rechargeable battery. The power cells used in electric vehicles, like Teslas, have an expected lifespan of around 300,000 to 500,000 miles, but a team of battery researchers believes it has come up with a recipe that can double that, leading to batteries that could potentially outlast the electric car itself. In a paper published in the The Journal of the Electrochemical Society earlier this month, battery researchers from Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University describe a new lithium-ion battery that could potentially power an electric vehicle for over one million miles and over 4,000 charging cycles while only losing about 10 percent of its charging capacity (and vehicle range) as it reaches the end of its lifespan. "

Well it turns out it was a Wired article which added some new details, and brought this one back into the headlines: "Full details of these cells including electrode compositions, electrode loadings, electrolyte compositions, additives used, etc. have been provided,” Dahn and his colleagues wrote in the paper. “This has been done so that others can recreate these cells and use them as benchmarks for their own R+D efforts.” According to a former member of Dahn’s team, the likely answer is that Tesla already has at least one proprietary battery chemistry that outperforms what’s described in the benchmark paper. Indeed, shortly after the paper came out, Tesla received a patent for a lithium-ion battery that is remarkably similar to the one described in the paper. Dahn, who declined to comment for this article, is listed as one of its inventors. The patented battery includes an electrolyte additive called ODTO that the patent claims can “enhance performance and lifetime of Li-ion batteries, while reducing costs.” It’s not certain that the battery described in the patent is the million-mile battery that Musk said would enter production next year, and neither Tesla nor Dahn are talking. But it’s a safe bet that Tesla’s proprietary battery performs even better."

UK OFFSHORE WIND PRICES REACH NEW RECORD LOW IN LATEST CFD AUCTION

"The latest UK renewable energy auction has awarded 12 projects, including 5.5 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind projects, at record low prices as low as £39.65 ($50.05)." reports Clean Technica: "The United Kingdom’s Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) announced twelve new renewable energy projects as recipients of the latest Contracts for Difference auction scheme last week, which will provide around 6 GW of capacity, generate enough power for the equivalent of over 7 million homes, and result in the creation of up to 8,000 jobs across the country."

Giles Dickson, CEO of the European wind energy trade body, WindEurope: "Offshore wind is now the second cheapest form of new power generation in NW Europe – behind onshore wind. The technology continues to develop. The supply chain continues to evolve. And it’s delivering huge volumes – this UK auction at 6GW is the world’s largest-ever wind energy auction."

LEGENDARY F1 DESIGNER ADRIAN NEWEY IS MOVING TO EXTREME E

"Extreme E, the new all-electric SUV racing series, has been drawing some pretty big names lately ahead of its first season in 2021. Now, we can add legendary Formula One designer Adrian Newey to the increasingly impressive list." says Jalopnik: "Newey is one of the most successful and innovative designers in F1's modern history. Whether he was working for McLaren, Williams, or Red Bull, Newey managed to create some absurdly visionary machines that were wholly capable of kicking ass and taking names. Now, he’s moving to Extreme E as the lead designer for the Veloce team that will be headed by two-time Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne and Harrison Newey, Adrian’s son, BBC Sport reports. When’s the last time you remember a racing series popping up out of nowhere that managed to attract the world’s biggest talents, be it drivers, engineers, or designers?" asks Jalopnik.

TESLA IS OPENING A RARE NEW SUPERCHARGER V3 STATION

"Months after launching its new Supercharger V3, we haven’t seen many next-generation stations from Tesla, but now we have confirmation that the automaker is bringing a Supercharger V3 to Florida." writes Fred at Electrek: "After unveiling the new Supercharger V3 6 months ago, Tesla only opened two partial stations with the latest charging technology and one full-fledged Supercharger V3 station in Las Vegas. It has been a somewhat slow deployment, but we are now hearing of a new Supercharger V3 station being deployed. Tesla applied for a building permit in Clearwater, Florida and the application specifies that Tesla is planning to build a ‘Supercharger V3 at the location. With the new charge rate combined with more advanced software that can prepare the battery pack for charging, a Tesla Model 3 Long Range can charge at up to 1000 miles per hour."

BYD ADL UPGRADES ENVIRO200EV FAMILY: NOW WITH HEAT PUMP INCLUDED

"The successful partnership between Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD in the UK already resulted in more than 400 electric buses delivered or on order since 2015, which encourages BYD to upgrade the offer." says InsideEVs: "BYD ADL Enviro200EV single-decker models received a heat pump to decrease energy consumption in winter and optimized vehicle layouts, which allows more space for passengers."

Using ADL’s expertise in bus design to optimise vehicle layouts and maximise the use of available space, the partnership will upgrade the BYD ADL Enviro200EV single decker to the new vehicle lengths of 10.9m (replacing the current 10.8m model) and 11.6m (offering two extra seats over the current 12m model, which it replaces).

The buses will utilise ADL’s new all-electric heating system for electric buses. This heat pump solution has been developed to transfer atmospheric heat in to the vehicle. Designed to run efficiently in low ambient temperatures, it can also be used in reverse to cool the vehicle during warmer weather. The high efficiency of the system enables additional operational range."

GRETA THUNBERG ASKS WORLD LEADERS AT UN: “HOW DARE YOU?”

"Greta Thunberg has excoriated world leaders for their “betrayal” of young people through their inertia over the climate crisis at a United Nations summit that failed to deliver ambitious new commitments to address dangerous global heating." writes The Guardian: "In a stinging speech on Monday, the teenage Swedish climate activist told governments that “you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is. You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal.”"
