Show #584

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 18th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA END OF QUARTER RUSH

From Morten Grove @mortenlund89  "As expected Glovis Courage has popped up within AIS-range again. ETA Zeebrugge: 22:00 CEST 19th Sep. It's the 7th ship, it is also the closest two ships have been entering Zeebrugge with Teslas. End of the quarter is going to WILD 🦁🐶 "

MODEL 3 EARNS THE 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ AWARD

From Tesla's Blog: "in new tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Model 3 has been named a 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicle, the highest achievement awarded by the Institute. To evaluate whether Model 3 met the criteria for this top rating, IIHS tested the car’s crashworthiness, occupant protection, crash avoidance, and headlight systems. Model 3 earned top marks in all eight tests, including a superior rating in front crash prevention, which evaluates a car’s Automatic Emergency Braking system, and the highest possible rating in IIHS’ headlight assessment. In addition, Model 3’s safety restraint system also earned high marks in IIHS’ evaluation. This was due in part to Model 3’s seats, which are designed and manufactured in-house at our dedicated seat factory in Fremont, as well as our thick curtain airbag and uniquely shaped front passenger airbag, which help protect a passenger’s head from the car’s A-pillar and center screen. In terms of crash mitigation, good headlights can help prevent nighttime crashes, which is why Model 3 comes standard with automatic high and low beam headlights that earned top marks in IIHS testing. And, when it comes to crash prevention, Model 3 earned a superior rating thanks to our Automatic Emergency Braking system, which successfully avoided collisions at both 12 miles per hour and 25 miles per hour."

The Verge says: "The Model 3 was only really dinged in two places. IIHS said that pre-June 2018 versions of the car only had “acceptable” headlights. And on all models, the group said there’s a “moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg” of the driver in head-on crashes that overlap with the driver’s side of the vehicle (which IIHS says is one of the most challenging tests)."

Car & Driver puts it in context: "There are currently 48 cars and trucks on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ list, a category that was created in 2013."

CHEVROLET BOLT MISSES IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK DUE TO POOR HEADLIGHTS

“The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV was recently tested by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and performed pretty well in overall crashworthiness tests. However, two things lowered the overall result." reports InsideEVs: "The first problem that prevented the Bolt from earning the Top Safety Pick rating is "Poor" headlights, which cause too much glare, according to IIHS. The second problem is the "Acceptable" result of the Small overlap front: passenger-side crash test”

DAIMLER TRUCKS & BUSES AND CATL ENTER GLOBAL BATTERY CELL MODULES SUPPLY AGREEMENT

Daimler Trucks & Buses and Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) have entered a global battery cell modules supply agreement for electric series trucks.

CATL will supply lithium-ion battery cell modules for a wide range of Daimler Trucks & Buses’ global electric truck portfolio to be introduced in markets from 2021 onwards, including the Mercedes-Benz eActros, the Freightliner eCascadia and the Freightliner eM2.

The development of the battery systems lies with Daimler Trucks & Buses. Battery pack assembly will be carried out by Daimler Trucks & Buses as well — at its Mercedes-Benz Mannheim plant in Germany and its Detroit (Michigan) plant in the US.

IF IT'S MOTOR SOUND YOU CRAVE, THE PORSCHE TAYCAN OFFERS IT FOR $500

"what if you're a car lover and you experience an EV like the Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan for the first time, you fall in love almost immediately with the car's instant torque, incredible acceleration, etc., but you just can't deal with the fact that the car is so quiet?" asks Steven Loveday at InsideEVs: "Porsche has the answer in the form of a $500 option, which you can find on the car's online configurator. The automaker calls it "Electric Sport Sound." It adds simulated "motor" sound inside and outside of the vehicle. Once you've paid for the sound, you can still choose to activate or deactivate it using the car's infotainment screen. Porsche describes the sound on its configurator and offers a sample so you can hear it"

NURBURGRING UPDATE

What's now becoming knows as Plaid Powertrain will hit the Model S first before the Roadster.

@elonmusk: "We expect these track times to be beaten by the actual production 7 seat Model S Plaid variant that goes into production around Oct/Nov next year."

@elonmusk: "No, original 5 forward facing seats plus 2 rear-facing smaller seats. The new rear seats will accommodate larger passengers than before.

Pauline  @justpaulinelol "Will the other Models also be available on plaid variants soon?"

New Roadster and X will come late”

Viv @flcnhvy "I guess new Roadster will easily beat the all time record of 6:44.97s?"

@elonmusk "Absolutely"

NEW TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 LEAKED PHOTOS SHOW MODEL 3 IN PRODUCTION

"Tesla Inc. is restating a claim made by CEO Elon Musk a few months ago that Giga Shanghai, which is still being built, will have 3,000 Model 3 electric vehicles (EVs) rolling off its new assembly lines by the end of the year." reports IBTimes: "Tesla's Gigafactory 3 stands on 86 hectares (210 acres) of land in Lingang, Shanghai. Earlier this week, it passed a mandatory government inspection required before starting production. Latest "leaks" seem to confirm Tesla's production timeline. New leaks from users on Weibo show Model 3 bodies inside Giga Shanghai. Leaks on Chinese social media platform Weibo from “Battery King” (an electric car enthusiast) reveal a largely complete section of Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai. The images show two partly-built Model 3s on an assembly line surrounded by various types of equipment."

TESLA INSTALLS SUPERCHARGER AT NURBURGRING TO 'REFUEL' TEST CARS

"Tesla just tweeted an image of one of its test vehicles plugged into a newly installed Supercharger at the Nürburgring. The tweet reads, "We installed a Supercharger at Nürburgring. Makes it feel like home, you know?" We've spoken to Tesla and the company confirms the new Supercharger is connected to the electrical grid and not a diesel generator. The new charging also suggests the company plans on returning to the 'Ring in the future, perhaps with the new Roadster or other performance variants of existing lineup. " says Motor1.com who onlly the day before reported on how they were charging the cars: " Auto, Motor, Und Sport reports that the company shipped a diesel generator to the track from the United States. The team there has been running it day and night, and the droning noise is allegedly starting to annoy the people who live nearby. The Tesla crew will reportedly be there for around three weeks, and by that time, citizens will likely be happy for them to leave. Then, track's neighbours will only need to put up with the sound of revving engines during the day."

My thoughts: money, no problem. Location: there isn't one for a long distance. Permits: takes time. Looks temporary, you can see where the forklift would lift it.

HOW F1'S BEST TEAM PLANS TO CONQUER FORMULA E

Mercedes has utterly dominated Formula 1 since the start of the turbo hybrid era, but is now entering a championship where total supremacy is hard to achieve." reports Autosport: "The might of a manufacturer means many resources - something the Mercedes F1 team has made major use of to achieve its dominant position. The FE arm - which James is keen to stress is not "an electric copy" - will deploy a similar approach. FE's spec-only first season, then the slowly developing technology during its second, third and fourth campaigns created a culture of close, exciting racing. That continued for the first season of the Gen2 era, and included that almost unbelievable run of eight different drivers winning the first eight races. But in 2018-19 three new rules really played a part in consistently mixing up the pecking order."

The article is part of Autosport Plus, which is a fiver a month and they do a free trial, but if you like motorsport there's really no alternative.

THE 2020 ZERO SR/F ELECTRIC SPORTBIKE ISN'T A COMPROMISE MOTORCYCLE

"The 2020 Zero SR/F fires up in total silence—it’s a trip. There’s no exhaust rumble or clattering pistons, just a few lights on the TFT dash. “Are you sure it’s on,” more than one person asked. But when you twist the throttle, you finally hear something. And more importantly–you feel something." writes Jalopnik today: "The EV bike outfit’s most notable competitor at the moment is none other than Harley-Davidson with its new LiveWire. Significantly, the Zero makes more power than H-D’s machine, has greater range, and is thousands of dollars cheaper. Part of Zero’s credibility has been forged in competition at the legendary Pikes Peak Hill Climb and on dirt racing tracks across the country."

TAIGA MOTORS’ ORCA IS A $24,000 ELECTRIC WATERCRAFT WITH A TWO-HOUR BATTERY

"Montreal startup Taiga Motors has spent the last few years tackling the tricky task of electrifying snowmobiles, but it’s now turning its attention to making cleaner and quieter personal watercraft. The company unveiled a pricey new Jet Ski-style watercraft called Orca at an event in Toronto Tuesday night that can last for up to two hours on a full charge." report The Verge today: "The Orca has a top speed of 65 miles per hour, and has 134kW of power (about 180 horsepower) on offer, which sounds like it will make for a fun ride. The 23kWh battery can be charged on standard or level 2 (240V) outlets, or more quickly with a DC fast charger (from 0 to 80 percent in 20 minutes), provided owners can find one of those near enough to the water (or with enough space to fit a truck and trailer)."

MODEL 3 OVERTAKES VW POLO AND IS BEST SELLING CAR IN 2019

"Up to and including August this year was the top 3 of best-selling cars below: Tesla model 3: 10,000

Volkswagen Polo: 9,529

Ford Focus: 8,265

Great news, of course, that Tesla is not only the best-selling car in a month, but over the whole year. The question is how many of these cars have been purchased through lease and whether the change in the rules regarding the addition of next year will also affect sales after January. There is a good chance that the last three months of this year there will be quite a few more Model 3s in NL."
