Show #572

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 6th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER DEREK REILLY. "In my day job I work in sales but outside of work I write EV reviews for a website www.theeffect.net. It has only been going for a few months but I'd love when you mention me to give the website a shout out as well."

THE PORSCHE TAYCAN IS NOT A TESLA KILLER

"The hot new Porsche Taycan is not a Tesla killer. As soon as it launched, or beforehand, many started comparing it to the Tesla Model S and debates online about which car was better ensued." says Johanna at Clean Technica: "Having other automakers create electric vehicles is a win for Tesla, whose goal is to accelerate our transition to sustainable energy. This is not a threat, but a success. Tesla’s endgame is accelerating the transition to sustainable energy, which benefits all of us globally. When other competitors create their own electric vehicles, what many tout as “Tesla killers” are actually fossil vehicle killers. This is Tesla achieving its goals."

And here's where I disagree: "Tesla isn’t just a brand. It’s a level of premium quality. It has been honing that quality in its hardware, software, and customer ecosystem for years."

PORSCHE CONSIDERING ELECTRIC 718 CAYMAN TO EXPAND EV LINEUP

"Porsche grew to prominence by building very small, lightweight sports cars, which begs this question: When will the automaker deliver an EV that honors its history and pedigree?" writes CHristopher Smith at Motor1.com: "We tackled this question yesterday following the Taycan’s debut, suggesting a bold follow-up move for Porsche engineers would be an all-electric 911. Failing that, we suggested a bonkers decision to create a new 914 from the ground up as a small, lightweight (or as light as possible) electric sports car with a relatively inexpensive price point. A report from Auto Express suggests Porsche has something in mind that splits the difference from our musings – a fully electric 718 Cayman. Porsche Deputy Chairman Lutz Meschke allegedly said that an all-electric 911 would be too tough, while the 718 might be just right. While all this talk of high-performance electric sports cars is alluring, in all likelihood the next EV Porsche will be an SUV, specifically the Macan. That update is already confirmed by Porsche as coming for the model’s next-generation in 2021."

PORSCHE IS CLOSE TO SECURING BATTERY SUPPLY DEAL WITH CATL

"Porsche and Chinese lithium-ion battery manufacturer CATL are “in good talks,” according to Michael Steiner, Porsche research and development chief, who admitted also that he meets with CATL management regularly." says InsideEVs: "t seems that the Porsche brand intends to diversify and expand its battery supplier list, since after the Taycan, electrification will become a primary path for the company. The Taycan is equipped with cells produced by LG Chem. CATL highly improved its market position over the past few years and soon with a new plant in Germany, might be the counterweight for Japanese and South Korean manufacturers in Europe."

TESLA MODEL 3 STUNS THE UK BY RANKING 3RD IN AUGUST

The UK new car market remained steady in August, with just 1,521 fewer cars registered than in the same month last year. Meanwhile, diesel registrations fell for the 29th month in a row. Zero emission cars saw the biggest percentage growth, up 377.5%, to 3,147 units as new models and some pent up demand boosted registrations.

"The UK’s new car registrations rankings from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in August 2019 proved quite surprising, thanks in no small part to the arrival and apparent success of the Tesla Model 3." reports Simon from Teslarati: "Prior to the Model 3’s arrival, Tesla had only been registering around a few hundred cars a month in Britain, to the point where the company did not even warrant its own separate brand in the SMMT’s monthly rankings. These numbers resulted in the SMMT’s Top 10 list for August 2019 having the “Other” category in third place, just behind the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf, both of which are more affordable than the Tesla Model 3."

IN AUGUST 2019, PLUG-IN EV CAR SALES IN NORWAY SLIGHTLY DECREASED

"In August, new passenger car registrations in Norway decreased by almost 17% year-over-year, which represents a lower appetite for cars in general." writes InsideEVs: "In such circumstances, passenger plug-in electric car registrations decreased by 3.1% to 5,919. The difference in decline allowed to gain several points of market share - 49.0% compared to 42.1% year ago. There was a chance to avoid this decrease in sales, but the plug-in hybrids are still shrinking quickly:

BEVs: 4,713 (up 13.4%, at 39.0% market share) + 648 ‘used’ + 138 vans (131 new and 7 used) + 0 FCVs"

PHEVs: 1,206 (down 38.2% market share)"

VW LOWERS THE PRICE OF THE E-UP IN REVISED VERSION

"Before its premiere at the IAA, VW has announced the price of the new e-Up: The basic list price in Germany is 21,975 euros. This makes the new e-Up, with a range of up to 260 km, somewhat cheaper than its predecessor." according to electrive: "VW already lowered the price of the e-Up from 26,900 to 22,975 euros at the end of last year. According to VW, the renewed price reduction was realised through the economies of scale of mass production. In Germany, purchasers of the e-Up will receive an environmental bonus of €2,000 from the state and a gross subsidy of €2,380 from Volkswagen, bringing the purchase price down to €17,595. In addition, there is a special leasing offer in Germany for the start of advance sales: from 18 September to 31 October 2019, e-up can be leased for 159 euros a month without special payment."

WILLIAMS ADVANCED ENGINEERING LAUNCHES NEW BATTERY TECHNOLOGY AT CENEX LCV2019

Williams Advanced Engineering will be showcasing its latest low-carbon vehicle technologies at Cenex LCV2019. The main focus of the stand will be an innovative battery pack showcasing Williams Advanced Engineering’s Adaptive Multi-Chem technology, which brings together the company’s knowledge from a wide variety of projects, including four seasons as the sole battery supplier to FIA Formula E.

Increasing the energy and power density of batteries is widely regarded as electrification’s greatest challenge. With the industry ramping up production of electric and hybrid vehicles, there is significant demand for new battery technologies. Manufacturers are usually faced with a compromise between energy and power density as they try to minimise the size and weight of battery packs for a target performance level. Williams Advanced Engineering’s Adaptive Multi-Chem technology provides the best of both worlds. It uses a state-of-the-art, bi-directional DC/DC converter to deliver high energy and high power density in a single pack.
