BYD, TOYOTA ENTER AGREEMENT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES

"BYD and Toyota announced this morning that the two industry powerhouses have entered into an agreement that will see them partnering on the development of electric vehicle batteries. The batteries lay the foundation for an electrified future for both companies as the agreement includes provisions to partner on the development of sedans and low-floor SUVs as well." writes Kyle Field for CleanTechnica: "The new set of vehicles will be produced under the Toyota brand specifically for the Chinese market in the early 2020s. Toyota has set a public target of selling a full 50% of its vehicles as electrified vehicles by 2025. The fuzzy use of “electrified” allows the company to count its traditional non-plug-in, fossil-fuel-powered, “self-charging” hybrids in the number. Boiling that down to hard numbers, Toyota is hoping to achieve 15% of its sales from fully electric vehicles on its new e-TNGA platform by 2030."

To curb global warming, both BYD and Toyota seek to reduce CO2 emissions by promoting the widespread use of BEVs. To accomplish these goals, both companies believe there is a need to put aside their rivalry and collaborate; therefore, the two companies have agreed to jointly develop BEVs.

TESLA VEHICLES ARE 8X LESS LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN FIRES

"Tesla has released its vehicle safety report for the second quarter of 2019. Similar to previous quarters, the report showed that Teslas operating on Autopilot are less likely to meet accidents on the road compared to vehicles operating without the driver-assist system enabled. Tesla’s report this quarter also included statistics on vehicle fires for the first time. " reports Simon at Teslarati: "The electric car maker’s data shows that between 2012-2018, there was approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. Considering that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation record one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled, Tesla’s figures make its electric cars over eight times less likely to be involved fires.  Tesla’s data includes incidents resulting from structure fires, arson, and several other factors unrelated to the vehicles themselves."

CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID AND PLUG-IN RUMORS ALREADY SWIRLING

"The Chevrolet Corvette C8's debut is just a few hours old, and speculation is already swirling about the vehicle's future that could include a variety of forms of electrification. When asked by Autocar about whether the mid-engined 'Vette could use an integrated starter-generator for a mild-hybrid system or a dedicated electric motor driving the front axle, a member of the 'Vette team told the publication: "You would not look stupid if you said that."" according to Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Back in 2015, General Motors registered a trademark for Corvette E-Ray, and the company has continued to renew that application into 2019. Rumors suggest the automaker might be reserving the moniker for the hybrid 'Vette."

KRÜGER SUCCESSION: OLIVER ZIPSE NEW BMW CEO

"Oliver Zipse will take the lead at BMW on 16 August, the board just decided as much. With Harald Krüger leaving, the German carmaker will have much to do to catch up on electric mobility, fast." says electrive.com: "When Krüger took over as Chairman of the Board of Management in 2015, the Group already had an innovative electric car on offer in the form of the i3. The local competition did not have anything that touched it for a long time. 2015 was a turning point for the BMWi electric division: Herbert Diess, then Board Member for Development, had made a decisive contribution to electric mobility at BMW – even during his time as Board Member for Purchasing, he had strengthened BMWi in-house. After his defeat in the duel for his successor at the top of the board, Diess moved to Volkswagen, and the upcoming electric offensive there now bears his signature."

VIVA LAS VEGAS: TESLA LAUNCHES FIRST V3 SUPERCHARGERS IN SIN CITY

"Not long ago, Tesla unveiled its new V3 Supercharger technology that's capable of delivering 250 kW of power. This means you can add up to 180 miles of range to a Model 3 Long Range in just 15 minutes. Since then, the automaker has added some V3 Superchargers to existing stations. However, its first brand-new V3 Supercharger station officially went live just yesterday." says InsideEVs: "The Las Vegas Tesla charging station has a total of 39 chargers. In addition to the V3 Superchargers, the site has 15 Level 2 Tesla Wall Connectors for those who aim to leave their car charging for a longer period of time. Tesla says the new site generates power through the use of solar canopies — which also provide shade for Tesla owners — and the energy is stored in Powerpacks that are located on-site."

GM FAILS TO IMPRESS WITH OFFICIAL 2020 CHEVY BOLT EV UPDATES AND CHANGES

"In keeping with the updates to the 2018 and 2019 model years, the 2020 Chevy Bolt EV receives only a couple of color changes and some minor feature adjustments. If the consumer-facing updates match only those listed on the fleet order guide, buying a Bolt EV in 2020 will look much the same as it does right now." reports TorqueNews: "While it doesn’t come as a surprise that GM has sticking with the same battery pack at this early stage in its EV development, it’s disappointing that there don’t seem to be any software tweaks to enable longer fast charging at the maximum rate of 55kW. Greater control over thermal management and battery conditioning would also be interesting additions for current Bolt EV drivers, some of whom will be ending three-year leases next year and looking for reasons to stick with the vehicle."

HYUNDAI MOTOR PUSHING TO PRODUCE KONA ELECTRIC IN CZECH FACTORY

"Hyundai Motor is considering producing 46,000 units of the Kona Electric at its Czech plant next year, industry sources said on July 17. This volume is almost equal to the 48,000 units to be produced at the company’s Ulsan plant this year." says the Korean news site BusinessKorea: "Currently, the Korean carmaker produces all of its eco-friendly cars for exports at the Ulsan and Asan factories in Korea, except those produced in China. Accordingly, if mass production of the Kona Electric begins at the Czech plant next year, it will be Hyundai Motor’s first electric car and green car produced overseas."

WORLD'S LONGEST ELECTRIC ROAD TRIP ENDS IN NEW ZEALAND

"A Dutch sustainability advocate completed the longest ever journey in an electric vehicle in New Zealand on Friday after a three-year drive that took him through more than 30 countries." reports Reuters: "Wiebe Wakker [vee-ba wakka] set off from the Netherlands in March 2016 in his “Blue Bandit” to showcase the potential of sustainable transport, funded by donations from those following his trip on social media. The 101,000-km (62,800 mile) trip took Wakker through Eastern Europe, Iran, India, Southeast Asia, before traveling around much of Australia and across to New Zealand. Wakker gave regular updates on his blog and social media throughout the journey, detailing visiting Iran’s biggest car manufacturer in Tehran, a breakdown on the Indonesian island of Java and visits to Australia’s outback and world-famous Uluru. The drive had relied on the support of strangers across the globe who offered the traveler food, a place to stay and the essential means to charge his car along the way."
