FORD USE VW'S ELECTRIC CAR PLATFORM

Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG today announced they are expanding their global alliance to include electric vehicles – and will collaborate with Argo AI to in-troduce autonomous vehicle technology in the U.S. and Europe

Ford will become the first additional automaker to use Volkswagen’s dedicated electric vehicle architecture and Modular Electric Toolkit – or MEB – to deliver a high-volume zero-emission vehicle in Europe starting in 2023.

Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles using the MEB architecture over six years, with a second all-new Ford model for European customers under discussion. This supports Ford’s European strategy, which involves continuing to play on its strengths – including commercial vehicles, compelling crossovers and imported iconic vehicles such as Mustang and Explorer.

Volkswagen started developing its MEB architecture in 2016, investing approximately $7 billion in this platform. The car-maker is planning to use this platform to build approximately 15 million cars for the Volkswagen Group alone in the next decade.

For Ford, using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture is part of its more than $11.5 billion investment in electric vehicles worldwide – and supports Ford’s commitment to offer its European customers a broad range of electric vehicles while meeting its sustainability commitments.

TESLA SUPPLIER HINTS AT DOUBLING PARTS PRODUCTION FOR MODEL 3

"precision stamping service provider China FineBlanking Technology (CFTC) - one of Tesla's suppliers from China, will reportedly double its monthly shipments for components of relays used in the Tesla Model 3 from 20,000 to 40,000 as early as August 2019." says InsideEVs: "Assuming that Tesla is able to produce on average around 5,500 Model 3 per week (up to around 7,000 peak) in California and is gearing up for 3,000 per week in China (starting with low-volume in Q4), the Tesla Factory in California would need to increase production significantly maybe to around 7,000+ per week and 90,000+ per quarter (more at peaks)."

TESLA MODEL S BEATS CHEVY, TOYOTA, AND CADILLAC FOR ULTIMATE CAR OF THE YEAR HONORS

MotorTrend have crowned their ultimate car of the year. "The selection and judging criteria have changed, the trophies have changed, and the vehicles most certainly have changed, but the spirit behind the Car of the Year is the same today as it was in 1949: Identify the most superlative new vehicle introduced each year." they say: "We are confident that, were we to summon all the judges and staff of the past 70 years, we would come to a rapid consensus: No vehicle we've awarded, be it Car of the Year, Import Car of the Year, SUV of the Year, or Truck of the Year, can equal the impact, performance, and engineering excellence that is our Ultimate Car of the Year winner, the 2013 Tesla Model S."

"The mere fact the Tesla Model S exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that once made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world," we wrote. "That the 11 judges unanimously voted the first vehicle designed from the wheels up by a fledgling automaker the 2013 MotorTrend Car of the Year should be cause for celebration. America can still make things." And still, the better part of a decade later, there isn't an electric car that can travel as far as a Model S, nor is there a street-legal production car of any motivation that can beat a Ludicrous Model S to 60 mph, not even a Ferrari LaFerrari or Porsche 918. Meanwhile, Tesla remains among the front-runners of advanced driver assistance technology; Autopilot and Autosteer were both unveiled on the Model S."

BMW IX3 ELECTRIC SUV RUMORED TO BE REAR-WHEEL DRIVE IN U.S.

"BMW hasn't been too secretive about the arrival of its newest artillery of electric vehicles. In fact, the Bavarian automaker has sent official spy photos of the iX3 – a concept that was introduced in 2018 but now confirmed for production next year – together with two other EVs i4 and iNext." reports Motor1.com: "BMWBlog got a bit more information about the all-new electric crossover. According to its source, the iX3 is based on the G08 platform, which underpins the long-wheelbase X3. Even better, the iX3 will allegedly have a rear-wheel-drive configuration in the United States. BMWBlog also got the supposed moniker of the iX3 – sDrive75, with "75" representing the 75 kWh capacity of its battery pack. Production of the iX3 will be in China and will be exported globally from there, including the U.S."

ELECTRIC CARS ARE DIFFICULT TO LIVE WITH ACCORDING TO JAGUAR BOSS

Rawdon Glover, UK managing director for Jaguar: “I’d like to see a faster roll-out of infrastructure in terms of scale, of course, especially in light of the government’s stated Road to Zero ambitions, but I also think there need to be steps to make what we have today more usable. I’m not finger-pointing: it’s clear that we have a role to play in that, as well as the Government and the incumbent suppliers. But we have to make it easier to live with electric cars, from ensuring geographical coverage to raising standards so that charge points always work to introducing a system where you can have one card – ideally your credit card – to pay wherever you are.  Having so many providers, each with their own payment systems that you need to sign up to in their own unique way, presents an unnecessary hurdle. There needs to be leadership from the Government that we can all get behind.”
