Show #450

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER SARI KANGASOJA. Hi Sari!!

TESLA TAKES SHORT SELLER TO COURT, SAYING HE MENACED ITS WORKERS

  • "Elon Musk’s war with Tesla Inc. short sellers just got weirder. The electric carmaker claims a California man who it says is part of an online group of short sellers has been stalking its Fremont factory and harassing its employees -- including dangerously swerving his car toward a Tesla Model 3 that was on a freeway test drive and injuring a Tesla security guard in a hit-and-run on company property." reports Bloomberg: "Tesla persuaded a state court judge on Friday to issue a temporary restraining order requiring the man to stay at least 100 yards away from its factory and employees."

TESLA PUTS NEW MODEL 3 INVENTORY ONLINE FOR BROWSING AND ‘IMMEDIATE’ DELIVERY

  • "Instead of picking options and waiting a few weeks for delivery of a custom-configured Tesla, buyers can now browse Tesla’s inventory of new Model 3s online and find cars available for immediate delivery (within a few days)." says Electrek today: "Until today, this was only available for Model S and X. There still aren’t any used cars listed for Model 3, but Tesla’s new inventory is accessible for anyone to browse online. Also cars are only appearing in some geos like California."

BYD DEBUTS E-SEED GT CONCEPT, SONG PRO AND E SERIES AT AUTO SHANGHAI

  • At the Auto Shanghai 2019, BYD has unveiled its E-SEED GT concept car and Song Pro SUV alongside its all-new e-series models on April 16 at the 18th International Automobile Industry Exhibition. The company also showcased its latest Dynasty series of vehicles, which were recently unveiled at the company’s spring product launch in Beijing.
  • A total of 23 new car models were exhibited at the event, held at Shanghai’s National Convention and Exhibition Center, fully demonstrating the BYD New Architecture (BNA) design, the 3rd generation of Dual Mode technology, plus the world-leading e-platform framework.

IN MARCH 2019 JAGUAR SOLD OVER 2,000 I-PACE

  • "Jaguar I-PACE sales reported by the manufacturer increased in March to a near-record level of 2,044, which turns out to be 8.4% of total volume for the brand globally." according to InsideEVs.com: "Hopefully, the output will continue to increase or at least stay above 2,000 per month."

THIS CLASSIC FORD BRONCO IS FULLY ELECTRIC AND TO DIE FOR

  • "Zero Labs Automotive is showing off its plan to build an electric version of the original Ford Bronco. More than just slapping an electric motor under the hood and pushing them out the door, this project also gives the off-roader modern luxury with things like real wood interior panels and digital instruments. The company plans to build an initial run of 150 of them and reservations are open now." writes Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Zero Labs Automotive Bronco electric restomod has a claimed 360-horsepower (269-kilowatt) output. A 70-kilowatt-hour battery allows for a 190-mile (306-kilometer) range. The motor runs through a five-speed manual transmission, which seems like an odd choice considering most electric vehicles use just a single speed.

ALEXANDER FRANK

Yes, I’d love my Model 3 making money for me while I’m not using it, which is actually most of the week while I’m working (Monday – Friday). I can’t park at my work, that’s why I’m taking my electric scooter or my  Renault Twizy (or soon VanMoof electric bike). I’d only add it to the Tesla Network after I’d feel comfortable watching Netflix while being driven by the car though. I love the cabin facing camera, gives me some ease. My day would then look like this: I’d unplug my Tesla Model 3 from my 11kw home charger, it’d drive me to work while I listen to your podcasts, once in the city at my work there’s no need to park, it would go about earning money. An hour or so before I want to leave work I’d press a button on the app and the car would wait for me outside to take me back home. LOVE IT!

RAJEEV NARAYAN

I may not be ready to use my primary EV as an automated taxi, as if something happened to it I would be without a car. If, however when it came time to buy a new EV, I would be wiling to get the old one be an automated taxi, instead of simply trading it in. I imagine a future where a network of privately and company owned EVs run by Uber, Lyft or even Tesla act as automated Taxis, and the ride sharing company pays you a fee to use your car. This would allow the owner to make a little extra income, while reducing capital costs to the taxi company.

JOHN FRUHWIRTH

No, I will not hire my Tesla out.

It is my dream car, I am emotionally attached to it and can't see myself treating it as a utility vehicle to make money for me.

MARK RICHARDS

I park in a garage, so it isn’t practical to make my car available in a car share network.  I don’t live in a city, in fact I am on the very edge of “civilization”, so I don’t think there would be much demand out here.

Robyn Edwards Perth Western Australia

NO..  I am receiving my Kona in 2.5 hours.... I will feel edgy if my partner drives it! A complete stranger? Never. I share pool vehicles at work, I see how they are treated and that is a closed group!

KARL CRAMER

I once drove for a ride sharing service and people would do disrespectful things to my car while I was still in it driving them, like leaving garbage or scratching at the roof fabric. I can't imagine what jerks would do if there was no one. I'll definitely use the service but I'm not going to sacrifice MY car to the horde.

NEIL

I don't think I would let my car be used, not because I would worry about it,but because I would worry about how it got charged. With a model 3 I would use about 40% of the battery for the daily commute. With another 40% for saving the battery life and cold weather allowance that would only leave 20% for that taxi service. I would want to see automatic charging stations like the Tesla snake they showed a few years ago before I would think of reconsidering.

ASHLEY HILL

depending on the options I'm considering it though is a few other things that make it easily worthwhile; like if was part of a Co-Operative (say a US$2000 deposit buy in) and if someone did cause troubles with it fleet would be large enough that I would have access to another one while fixes got underway.

Would also do if remote operation instead of full self driving was on the table for same deal; would let someone remote drive it to another driver similar to current car next door /car share service; especially if the Tesla implemented an always on "near-impossible to crash" feature.
