Show #432

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

I sign up to a daily email called Chartable and it tells you how each Podcast does in the various charts. And how on earth has this happened, EV News Daily is the #1 Automotive podcast in the UK.

There are three new Patreon supporters, hello to ROBERT SAUNDERS, new PRODUCER DON MILLER and EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OHAD ASTON

MARCH SALES NUMBERS!

  • From Matthias Schmidt: "#Tesla has become the first manufacturer to register >10,000 pure electric passenger cars in a single month in Western Europe"
  • "7-in-10 of Norway's new car registrations in March were plug-in. - First month on record that a European market surpassed >10k BEV electric car registrations. HOWEVER Norway remains unrepresentative due to the tax structure, heavily favouring EV over ICE."
  • "1,153 #Telsa #Model3 registered in France in March Model 3 mix of total BEV electric car registrations in March: 25% Top selling BEV model in France remained Renault Zoe: 1,254"

TESLA MODEL 3 WAS #1 SELLING CAR IN NETHERLANDS IN MARCH 2019

  • "According to official stats, in March, the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling car of any kind in the Netherlands with 2,195 new registrations (5.6% of all sales)." Says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "We failed to spot a single model that would be above 1,000 registrations, and we believe that the second-best plug-in model is below 500 (full sales report from the Netherlands is expected later this month). The results are amazing from all ways, but we must remember that Tesla had a high number of orders early and it’s too early to judge the demand from the initial outcome. In total, Tesla registrations stand at 2,209 in March (including 8 Model S and 6 Model X) and 2,761 YTD."

PSA AND FCA IN TALKS TO JOINTLY DEVELOP ELECTRIC VEHICLES

  • "After reporting in mid-March that PSA is targeting more acquisitions, Automotive News has now published new interesting information about the French manufacturer. The second-largest Europe-based automaker in 2018 measured by sales numbers is allegedly discussing a new partnership with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that will be focused on the development of electric vehicles, according to “people familiar with the talks.” According to Anthony Carr for Motor1.com: "Word on the street is the two auto giants are considering developing a “super platform” together, an architecture for EVs that will be used by all the brands within the PSA and FCA ranges. “People who asked not to be named as the matter is private” have told the online publication that the two automakers want to reduce investment costs and make their electric vehicles more profitable. A potential cooperation between PSA and FCA is also seen as the first step towards a full merger between the two automakers. PSA is believed to be very interested in such a move because of FCA’s exposure in the United States, where the French company will be making a full comeback by the middle of next decade. In addition, FCA also owns Jeep which is one of the most appealing marques in today’s industry."

BYD INTRODUCES 27-METER LONG K12A, THE ‘WORLD’S LONGEST PURE ELECTRIC BUS’

  • "BYD has introduced the K12A, a 27-meter (88.5 feet) long bi-articulated bus that it’s calling “the world’s longest pure electric bus.” The company introduced the K12A at its headquarters in Shenzhen, China. BYD’s K12A has a passenger capacity of 250 people and can reach a maximum speed of 70 km/h (about 44 mph). It has a range of 186 miles on a single full charge." Reports Phil for Electrek: "BYD claims the K12A is also the world’s first electric bus with a 4WD system that can “switch between 2WD and 4WD smoothly to meet the demands of different terrains, while also lowering the vehicle’s overall energy consumption.”"

VOLVO XC40 PURE ELECTRIC VERSION COMING THIS YEAR

  • "It was a little over a year ago when Volvo announced plans for an EV onslaught with an aim for fully electric cars to make up 50 percent of the automaker’s total sales by the middle of the next decade. It looks like the XC40 is going to lead the way as representatives of the Swedish brand have told Automotive News Europe the pure electric variant of the small crossover will be revealed before the year’s end." Writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Without going into any details about the zero-emissions XC40, Volvo announced plans to have its very first EV on sale by 2020 when the Tesla Model 3-rivaling Polestar 2 is also scheduled to hit the streets. The two models will have quite a lot in common as both are set to ride on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has also served as foundation for the Lynk & Co 01, 02, and 03 models. As a reminder, Lynk & Co is a new brand from Volvo’s parent company Geely, which also happens to own Lotus."
