TESLA REGISTERS HUGE BATCH OF 28K MODEL 3 VINS
- According to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla recently exhibited what could very well be the most encouraging sign of the Model 3 ramp to date. From Friday to Sunday, Tesla registered a mammoth batch of more than 28,000 Model 3 VIN registrations, over 20,000 of which were designated for international markets."
- "The new registrations were reported by Model 3 VIN tracking group @Model3VINs, which tracks Tesla’s filings for the electric sedan. This latest batch also complements the more than 14,800 Model 3 VINs that were registered in the week of January 6. That’s more than 42,000 Model 3 VINs filed during the first two weeks of the first quarter alone."

ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT DETROIT’S 2019 AUTO SHOW
- "Last year, 361,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in the United States, just 2 percent of car purchases, according to estimates by InsideEVs.com. Tesla, which has struggled with production and delivery problems, accounted for half of those sales." reports The New York Times today. And with the 2019 Detroit Auto Show starting today for trade, with public days later this week, expect a lot of talk about EVs. "Automakers are preparing to introduce dozens of fully electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles over the next three years, and Hyundai, Kia, Mini, Nissan and Audi will display electric models due in the United States this year. It is a gambit based on the idea that many mainstream car owners will rush to make the leap from gasoline. But to sell all those cars, the manufacturers have to attract a new class of customer."

FORD PROMISE A ‘BIG SURPRISE’
- "Ford Motor is gearing up to launch new electric cars as soon as next year, CEO Jim Hackett told CNBC on Sunday. Ford has previously announced its plans to invest $11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022 and produce 40 hybrid and fully electric cars, in a plan to revive its slowing business. However, the company's chief told CNBC that drivers should be prepared for 'a big surprise' from Ford."
- He told CNBC: "We talked about a huge investment in electric vehicles. We have 16 models that are in design and development. We have a pretty big surprise coming next year."
NISSAN IMS CONCEPT DEBUTS AT THE DETROIT MOTOR SHOW
- "Nissan has revealed the IMs concept at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. Designed as an all-electric “elevated sports sedan,” it blends luxury saloon packaging with crossover styling." says AutoExpress: "Powered by two electric motors, the all-wheel-drive IMs concept produces a claimed 476bhp and 800Nm of torque. The motors are fed by a 115kWh battery pack, which Nissan says will provide a range of 380 miles on a single charge.To maximise interior space, Nissan tucked its drivetrain components under the chassis, creating a completely flat cabin floor. The front two seats can also swivel to face the rear bench, due to the absent centre console."

AUDI PB18 E-TRON LIMITED TO 50 UNITS?
- "As it’s often the case with concept cars, the Audi PB18 e-tron is expected to go make the jump to series production. But there's a catch that must be highlighted. According to Autoweek Netherlands, the four-ringed automaker is planning 50 examples of the breed." according to AutoEvolution: "For starters, Audi isn’t the type of automaker who limits production to 50 units, even if we’re talking about a wild-looking, all-electric supercar. It would make more sense to up the production run to 500 or 1,000 examples, especially from a financial standpoint. The PB18 e-tron neither has the skills to take on Tesla’s second-generation roadster despite the three-motor setup, 95-kWh battery, and fast-charging capability."

SEAMLESS EV CHARGING IS CATCHING ON IN NORTH AMERICA
- "Two of North America’s largest charging networks, Greenlots and ChargePoint, recently formed a roaming partnership that will enable charging across both networks. Beginning in mid-2019, customers will be able to charge on either the ChargePoint or Greenlots networks without the need to create separate accounts" says InsideEVs in an EVANNEX article today.
- Lin-Zhuang Khoo, Senior VP, Greenlots: "his once-fragmented industry is building momentum towards true driver interoperability thanks to adoption of standards like OCPI that are beneficial to drivers, automakers, grid operators and charging infrastructure providers. What’s particularly encouraging about this positive trend is that it is happening in advance of major policy changes or other external forces – a sign that the EV charging market is maturing in concert with surging customer demand for EVs."

SOLAR + STORAGE HALF THE COST OF GAS PEAKER PLANTS
- One of your must-read websites is CleanTechnica, and a new article from Steve Hanley today is less about EVs but more about how we power them.
- "S&P Global reports the cost of solar with battery backup dropped precipitously in 2018. In a few cases in the sunny Southwest region of the United States, several tenders for solar plus storage came in at under $30 per megawatt-hour last year. Stand alone prices for installed battery storage — based on a 20 megawatt-hour system with 4 hours of storage — dropped 40% from the previous year to $357 per kilowatt-hour and are expected to keep falling. Bloomberg New Energy Finance projects a further 52% reduction by 2030."
- "Some CleanTechnica readers have been wondering why Kia and Hyundai have such low production targets for their newest EV offerings. The clamor for battery cells to meet the energy storage demand may be part of the reason for those low numbers.”
