Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 11th December 2018. Itā€™s Martyn Lee here and Iā€™ve been through EV story today so you donā€™t have to.

Ā

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, theyā€™ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. Itā€™s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

EV CHAMPION CARLOS GHOSN AND NISSAN INDICTED IN JAPAN

  • "Carlos Ghosn and Nissan, the Japanese automaker he saved from collapse, were indicted Monday on allegations of financial misconduct, deepening a crisis that already brought down one of the global car industry's most iconic figures." says CNN Business: "Tokyo prosecutors said they indicted Ghosn, 64, and Nissan for under-reporting his income over a five-year period and are investigating allegations that the practice went on for even longer. Prosecutors said Monday that they are also arresting Ghosn and Kelly again as they investigate additional allegations that the two men under-reported Ghosn's income by more than 4.2 billion yen ($38 million) between 2015 and 2017."

TESLA MODEL 3 EUROPEAN REFERRAL CODES

  • People have worked out how European Model 3 reservation holders can get 6 months free supercharging by using a referral code.
  • If you try to type one in you get the page for the Model S or X so here how it's done, via ClearnTechnica..."Send an email to buildmy3EMEA@tesla.com with the word ā€œReferralā€ in the subject line. In the body of your email, include your name and contact information, the reservation number (starts with RN), and the referral code youā€™d like to use. This is the method to use if you have already configured your Model 3, which is a workaround for Europeans until Tesla changes the website options. Note that it may take a few days for Tesla to update your order."

Ā

  • In the meantime, Tesla are working hard to add CCS cables to their European Superchargers. Earlier in 2018 I reported on their engineers doing the preparatory work, as reported on Reddit, so i hope now the news is public there's an aggressive push to simply add the cables if all the wiring is ready. Tesla has said they'll prioritise the busiest stations.

MOTORWAY CHARGEPOINTS SHOULD BE SAVED FOR PURE EVS

  • "Plug-in hybrids should be stopped from using rapid chargepoints on motorways until they can accept electricity at a faster rate to stop blocking pure EVs." reports Natalie Middelton for FLeetworld in a story today which got a lot of coverage in the press: "The Development of the UK Public Chargepoint Network report says widespread confusion over how fast electric vehicles can be ā€˜refuelledā€™ could be undermining efforts to provide an adequate public chargepoint network. To summarise, RAC Foundation director Steve Gooding, a chargepoint will only ever be as ā€˜rapidā€™ as the car that it plugs into; pure EVs only need around five minutes of charging at the quickest rapid chargepoints to get 15 miles of range while plug-in hybrids will need around an hour to achieve the same thing. To ensure drivers of pure EVs are not ā€œblockedā€ from using essential chargepoints, report author Harold Dermott, who has spent more than 35 years in the motor manufacturing industry, says drivers of plug-in hybrids should not be allowed to use them, until PHEVs have both a greater electric-only range and can accept electricity at a faster rate."

FORMULA E IS A MUST WATCH SAYS BBC

  • "The new Formula E season gets under way in Saudi Arabia on 15 December, and you can watch all 13 races live on the BBC. The all-electric series will take place in some of the most iconic and eye-catching cities in the world - from Marrakesh to Paris, with the season finale a double header in New York. This will be the fifth season of Formula E, and promises to be the most exciting and interesting so far, with some big names among the 11 teams and 22 drivers. The opening race in Riyadh is live on the BBC Sport website, Red Button and Connected TVs from 12:00 GMT on Saturday." says Gary Rose for BBC Sport today: "New for 2018-19 is 'Attack Mode' - akin to something from Mario Kart, this is another temporary speed boost that will be available to drivers during races. It will require drivers to take additional risks by moving off the racing line and on to a different area of the track, where the new mode will be activated, providing the car with a temporary power boost. Perhaps the most significant addition to the line-up for this season is Felipe Massa. The former Ferrari and Williams driver retired from F1 last year and will this season race for Venturi in the all-electric series. The Brazilian will be reunited with former Williams reserve driver Susie Wolff, the first female team principal in Formula E. Stoffel Vandoorne - Fernando Alonso's team-mate at McLaren for the past two seasons - has also made the switch to Formula E and will race for HWA Racelab. Among the other competitors are Nick Heidfeld, who spent a decade in Formula 1, and former Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne, who is the reigning champion."

THE BMW IFE.18 DRIVETRAIN

  • On 15th December, the new BMW iFE.18 and the BMW i Andretti Motorsport Team will contest their first race in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Ad Diriyah (KSA). At the heart of the car, which was developed for Season 5, lies the drivetrain: The Racing eDrive01. It brings together the pioneering spirit, innovation and technological expertise of both BMW Motorsport and BMW i.
  • Work on developing the BMW drivetrain for Formula E began in early 2017
  • The electric motor is primarily made up of three parts: The rotor, the stator and the casing. In order to reduce weight and for strengthening, among other things, the rotor has supports made of fibre composites. In addition, innovative materials such as highly thermally-conductive resins, titanium and ceramic are used. The combination of all the state-of-the-art technologies used results in a high gravimetric energy density.
  • The electric motor is cooled by a virtually 360Ā° cooling geometry in aluminium casing manufactured via the additive manufacturing procedure. In addition, materials with high thermal conductivity ā€“ such as ceramic and resin ā€“ are used. Thanks to CFD optimization, the pressure loss is minimal and maximum efficiency is guaranteed.
  • The inverter converts direct current from the standard battery into alternating current, which powers the electric motor. Parts of its casing are also made from fibre composites.

ELECTRIC CARS COULD SPELL END OF FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE, VW EXEC SAYS

  • Eric at Green Car Reports notes; "Volkswagen's head of e-mobility in North America, Matthew Renna, said at a round-table discussion with journalists at the LA auto show last month that electric cars will mark the end of FWD, according to a report in Motor Trend. Not that a front-wheel-drive electric car is inherently bad. Most electric cars today are FWD, including the VW e-Golf and the Nissan Leaf. The advantages of FWD for gas cars included better space efficiency, less weight, lower cost, and better foul-weather traction with the weight of the engine over the drive wheels. With no compelling reason to put the motor in the front of the car and drive the front wheels, Renna said, "With the improved dynamics of rear-wheel drive, that lends itself to being a bit better for a rear-drive platform. If it's the same efficiency and the same cost, dynamics would prevail." Furthermore, in an electric car with relatively even weight distribution (because it doesn't have a heavy engine hanging off one end or the other), the rear is where you want power to go, because that's where the body weight transfers when the driver accelerates."

ABB TO POWER EUROPE'S LARGEST ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY FACTORY IN POLAND

  • LG Chem, one of the largest chemical companies in the world, has selected ABB to provide a substation for Europeā€™s largest electric car battery factory in Poland.
  • The new car battery plant will be capable of supplying up to 250,000 electric cars with batteries per annum. It is also the first large-scale lithium-ion battery plant for automotive applications producing all battery components, from electrodes to cells, modules and packs.
