"So Germany‘s carmakers finally agree to pay up to €3,000 for a hardware retrofit of a Euro 5 #diesel car. But only in those German cities affected by driving bans. And only after they can develop, certify and build these new NOx catalytic converters, .. and that won‘t be until 2021, by which time they expect NOx levels in almost all of these cities to drop below the EU mandated limits and the problem goes away on its own along with any costs. So this whole exercise is basically just for the TV cameras."
TESLA MODEL 3 SPOTTED IN EUROPE WITH DIFFERENT CHARGING INLET
- You can always rely on InsideEVs to have the scoop on a story like this. "It comes as no surprise that a Tesla Model 3 in Europe would have a different charging inlet, but it’s exciting news. The time seems to be more quickly approaching for our friends across the pond. We’ve learned about and reported on several instances that suggest Tesla is gearing up for its Model 3 launch in Europe. Prior to this report, any Tesla Model 3 vehicles spotted outside of North American have been U.S. models that found their way out of the country. Now, we have the first spotting of a model with a Euro-spec charging inlet." according to Stephen Loveday: "The Model 3 was photographed by Facebook user Detlef Knobloch (Knobi) and first shared on the social media network’s Tesla Model 3 group. The images were captured at Tesla Grohmann Automation’s home base in Prüm, Germany. Tesla acquired the engineering equipment maker and supplier for over $100 million in January 2017."

TESLA APPOINTS NEW BOARD CHAIR
- "Tesla’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Robyn Denholm has been appointed as Chair of the Tesla Board, effective immediately. So that she will be able to devote her full attention to the Tesla Chair role, Robyn will be leaving her role as CFO and Head of Strategy at Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications company, once her six-month notice period with Telstra is complete. Robyn will be serving as Tesla Chair on a full-time basis. To ensure a smooth transition during the remainder of Robyn’s time at Telstra, Elon will be a resource to Robyn and provide any support that she requests in her role as Chair. Robyn will continue to provide the necessary focus and time to Telstra during the remainder of her time there, and she will also temporarily step down as Chair of Tesla’s Audit Committee until she leaves Telstra. Robyn has served on the Tesla Board as an independent director since 2014. Her global experience in both Australia and Silicon Valley encompasses leadership roles across a range of technology companies, including Telstra, Juniper Networks, and Sun Microsystems."
- She added: “I believe in this company, I believe in its mission and I look forward to helping Elon and the Tesla team achieve sustainable profitability and drive long-term shareholder value.”
- And Elon Musk said: "“Robyn has extensive experience in both the tech and auto industries, and she has made significant contributions as a Tesla Board member over the past four years in helping us become a profitable company. I look forward to working even more closely with Robyn as we continue accelerating the advent of sustainable energy.”
ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND SOLAR ARE FUELLING A BATTERY STORAGE BOOM
- "A dramatic rise in demand for electric cars and solar power could see a peak in demand for battery storage that will cost over a trillion dollars globally within 22 years. Bloomberg New Energy Finance has revealed new figures showing that the global energy storage market will grow to 942 gigawatts by 2040. That's double the US's energy consumption for the entire year in 2008. Providing the infrastructure to meet this demand will cost $1.2 trillion worldwide by 2040, the report warns. The Long-Term Energy Storage Outlook says the capital cost of a utility-scale lithium-ion storage system will fall another 52 per cent by 2030, according to the in-depth report published by Bloomberg. Cheap battery costs will mean renewable power sources - particularly solar and wind - will be able to fuel grids even when there isn't a breeze blowing or overnight. Governments across the world are also spurring demand for electric cars and solar power."
- Edward Fenster, the executive chairman of San Francisco-based rooftop-solar company Sunrun Inc. 'Storage is just so sensibly the next step in the evolution of renewable energy,' 'If we're going to get to 100 percent renewable energy, we'll need storage.'
EMOTORWERKS PARTNER WITH EO CHARGING
- eMotorWerks, a subsidiary of Enel's advanced energy services global business line Enel X and a leading provider of intelligent and cloud-connected smart-grid charging solutions, and EO Charging, one of the UK's leading domestic and fleet EV charging manufacturers, have partnered to launch the UK's and Europe's smartest home charger.
- This new solution will integrate eMotorWerks' JuiceNet, a cloud-based platform aggregating and managing charging station demands, into the new EO Mini Pro electric vehicle (EV) charger, delivering smart grid-connected home charging stations.
- Expanding on the success of the EO Mini Home charger (currently the smallest fast charger on the UK market), the EO Mini Pro powered by JuiceNet offers customers multiple benefits such as smartphone charging control and an online dashboard which can:
- Schedule charging times – helping EV drivers benefit from cheaper electricity
- Send alerts and reminders to optimise charging
- Allow EV drivers to utilise more green energy from the grid
- View historical charging data via the dashboard – ideal for fleet managers wanting to reimburse employees for charging at home
- Lower driving costs by enabling EV drivers to earn or save money when their energy provider offers dynamic tariffs or demand response type programmes for charging (or not charging) at certain times
- Valery Miftakhov, founder and CEO of eMotorWerks: ""By participating in energy services, such as demand response, drivers can reduce EV operating costs and relieve pressure on the grid at times of stress. FORD TRIES BEING A SCOOTER COMAPNY
- "Ford, struggling with a depressed stock price and facing constant questions about what, exactly, it’s trying to do as a business now, offered up Wednesday a solution that’ll finally convince everyone it’s something more than a car company: the Blue Oval bought some electric scooters." reports Jalopnik: "Ford’s Smart Mobility division said in a blog post Wednesday that it had acquired the startup Spin, which makes some of the dockless, all-electric scooters you’ve maybe seen zipping around town. Like its counterparts, Spin offers its scooters at a flat fee of $1, with an additional 15 cents tacked on per minute they’re in use."

INSTAVOLT HITS 200
- Of little use to me with a Renault ZOE and AC only charging, but of huge interest to most people, Instavolt in the UK just hit 200 chargers installed.
- There are currently 10,888 public chargers in the UK. The majority of these are slow chargers which can take many hours to fully recharge a vehicle. Only 1,823 public chargers are rapid chargers, requiring just minutes to add significant range. InstaVolt believes that rapid charging will quickly become the principal means of public charging.
- CEO Tim Payne said: “In order for drivers to drive an EV in the same way that they are used to driving a conventional vehicle, they need to be able to recharge quickly and continue their journey. By using the InstaVolt network of rapid chargers drivers can be confident of a reliable experience, and being back on the road in minutes.”
BP INVESTS £25M IN RAPID CHARGE POINTS
- "Company car and van drivers could soon be able to pay for petrol, diesel and electricity on a single fuelcard at BP service stations. The fuel giant has said it will start rolling out ultra-fast charge points across its network of almost 1,300 service stations from the beginning of next year." says Fleet News: "After buying Chargemaster – the operator of the UK’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network and a leading manufacturer of charge points – for £130 million a combined-use card is seen as the next logical step. It is also looking at integrating EV charging into its BPme app. David Martell, chief executive of the now BP Chargemaster, said the company was investing £25m over the next 12 months and expected the rollout of ultra-fast chargers, which can charge a car in a matter of minutes, to be completed within three years. As well as manufacturing charge points and installing them, BP Chargemaster runs the UK’s largest public network of charge points, Polar. It currently operates 6,500 charge points, which equates to 43% of the UK’s 15,000-strong publicly available network. Martell said it was increasing Polar’s reach by 150 units per month."
BMW SECURES CATL BATTERY CELLS WORTH FOUR BILLION EUROS
- And finally Electrive has some clarity on the future plans for BMW: "BMW has confirmed that the upcoming CATL factory in Erfurt in 2021 will also supply batteries for the iNEXT. CATL will deliver battery cells worth four billion euros to BMW as part of the agreement signed some months ago. In this context, BMW also confirmed that between the BMW i3, Mini Electric, the BMW iX3, BMW i4 and the iNEXT, a total of five fully electric models will be available from the manufacturer. An end to the BMW i3, which has been subject to some speculation, will not take place in the next few years."
- CEO Harald Kruger said: "“With the launch of the BMW i3, the BMW Group established itself early as a pioneer in the field of electric mobility. Electrification is one of the key pillars of the Group’s Strategy NUMBER ONE > NEXT. By 2021, the BMW Group will have five all-electric models: the BMW i3, the MINI Electric, the BMW iX3, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT. By 2025, that number is set to grow to at least twelve models. Including plug-in hybrids – whose electrically powered range will increase significantly in the coming year – the BMW Group’s electrified product portfolio will then comprise at least 25 models.”
