Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 30th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.

LONDON POWERS AHEAD IN RANKING OF BEST CITIES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE

  • "London has been revealed as the best city for electric vehicle (EV) charging points, beating environmentally conscious cities such as Oslo and Berlin." according to City AM: "In the UK, London has sailed ahead of Manchester, ranked 18th place; Edinburgh (31st) and Leeds (35th). Internationally, its closest rival was Amsterdam, closely followed by fellow Netherlands-based city Rotterdam in third place, while it comfortably beat Oslo, despite Norway having more EV sales per capita than any other country in the world. At the other end of the scale, cities such as Cape Town, Cairo, Sao Paulo and Seoul scored zero on the index because they lacked charging points or received low funding for EV initiatives."
  • "In March the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, unveiled plans to install a further 100 rapid charging points to the 2,000 standard charging points already installed in the capital."

  • TOP 5 MARKETS FOR ALL-ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE
  • Starting a geography lesson: "Norway is not the biggest European country, in fact it’s one of the smallest in terms of population, but still manages to stay on top the all-electric car market in Europe." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The rolling 12-month total sales for the top five markets, provided by EagleAID, shows that Germany is consistently growing for a strong second after Norway, while France and the UK seem stuck for some time. The Netherlands is on the rise, too"

BYD BOOMING IN THE NORDICS – BIG ELECTRIC BUS ORDER FOR BYD IN SWEDEN

  • "After the recent Norwegian order for 42 articulated BYD electric buses for Oslo, now follows another large order from Sweden for a total of 24 electric buses." says Electric Cars Report.
  • Isbrand Ho, Managing Director at BYD Europe: “BYD’s efforts in the Scandinavian market are paying off. Our recent orders in not only the Swedish but also in the Norwegian market have made BYD one of the leaders in the electric bus field. Winning this order gives us more confidence to win more in this important market. We are looking forward to turning Scandinavia even greener.”

CHINA LAUNCHES PILOT EV BATTERY RECYCLING SCHEMES

  • "China will launch a pilot electric vehicle battery recycling scheme in 17 cities and regions, the industry ministry said, with Beijing keen to head off an emerging pollution threat." according a Reuters report over the weekend: "the cities and regions would encourage car producers to establish recycling service outlets and cooperate with battery producers, used car dealers and scrap merchants to build regional recycling systems. It said the entire industrial chain needed to be fully mobilized in order to ensure that EV batteries were recovered. It would strictly control the number of new enterprises involved in battery recycling and make full use of existing recycling bases in China in order to promote sustainable development in sector."
  • "Data published by the industry ministry this week showed that China produced 413,200 new energy vehicles (NEV) in the first six months of this year, up 94.9 percent compared with a year earlier. Sales more than doubled to 412,000 units over the period."

TESLA REDEFINES ‘LUXURY’ SEGMENT AS INDUSTRY SHIFTS FOCUS TO TECHNOLOGY

  • Simon Alvarez at Teslarati has been asking why Tesla are doing so well against the likes of Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 Series: "How then, are Tesla’s premium vehicles, which adopt a minimalistic theme and an almost spartan interior, performing so well in a market where more is usually better? By invoking a sense of luxury through deep software integration, of course."

  • "I picked up this beauty 2 days ago and I can't say enough great things about it. Thank you @elonmusk and @Tesla for making the future fun and green! This car is the equivalent of ice cream flavored vegetables. Who knew being environmentally friendly could be so fun! pic.twitter.com/5filRGQQOW - Paul Storost (@PaulStorost) July 27, 2018

FROM AN ASTON MARTIN TO A TESLA MODEL S: WHY ONE OWNER MADE THE CHANGE

  • Autocar ask: "Why doesn’t Tesla do what just about every other car maker does and force sales by inflating discounts and trade-in allowances, and hang the consequences? It’s not as if it doesn’t need the income. At the end of the first quarter of 2018, the company’s debt stood at £1.5 billion."
  • Well Tesla replied: "“We don’t discount because Tesla is a mission-driven company. We want to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport and energy, but not by profiting on things like vehicle trade-ins and discounting. The aim of our trade-in programme is to get the best price for the customer, not for Tesla. There is no profit angle. The service is to help customers get out of their current car and into a Tesla. There is no negotiating; simply the best price, first time.”
  • "It’s why Tesla claims not to run its service departments as a profit centre (it says it runs them at break-even) and why it doesn’t insist on an annual service to maintain its new-car warranty. It recommends having one, but says that missing a service will not invalidate the warranty"

TESLA IS MAKING A $1500… SURFBOARD?

  • "Tesla is no stranger to branded merch. Its got the standard company swag — the hats, the shirts, and the mugs. It’s got quirkier stuff, like miniature Teslas for kids and USB chargers shaped like the Superchargers that juice up their vehicles. And now they’ve got… surfboards?" writes Greg Jumparaak for TechCrunch.
  • Product Description "“Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, surfboard shaper for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight “Black Dart” carbon fiber, inspired by the interiors in our cars, and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss.”
