Denis Petropoulos, Chairman of the Baltic Exchange

Season 2, Episode 9,   May 28, 2021, 11:00 AM

In his conversation with Mark Williams, Denis Petropoulos, Chairman of the Baltic Exchange, ranges over some original ideas to cut emissions; how the Baltic Exchange might alter its operations in a multi-fuel world; whether a ‘sweet spot’ exists at which  cargo owner bears responsibility for ships’ emissions and their costs while assisting owners with sailing ‘with due despatch’ and what happens to the tanker spot market if cargo owners sponsor increasing numbers of low-carbon fuelled ships via long-term charters.

One of the best known names in international tanker shipping, Denis is currently serving a double term as Chairman of the Baltic Exchange.  He is also an NED of Tsakos Energy Navigation.  Denis began his career as a shipbroker at Clarkson’s in 1978. He was a founding partner of Braemar Tankers Ltd in January 1986 and moved to the main board of Braemar Shipping Services Ltd in 2002 where, until his departure in 2018, he was particularly responsible for building the group brand in Asia.  Never short of an opinion and a keen defender of the uses of data and research, Denis has chaired the Baltic Exchange Council during its early days as part of SGX.
