The Intergovernmental Authority for Development IGAD has upgraded its presence in South Sudan from a liaison office to a mission. The Head of Mission, Aleu Garang arrived in Juba two months ago to assume his new duties.
In an interview with Radio Miraya, Aleu explained that the functions of his office are different from the office of the IGAD Special Envoy, whose sole mandate is the mediation of the 2018 revitalized peace process.

Ambassador Aleu said the mission will handle a broad scope of programs in areas of health, education, and infrastructure development.
