In this ship.energy podcast, Gavin Allwright, Secretary General of the International Windship Association (ISWA), explains why he is such a passionate advocate for the use of wind propulsion for commercial shipping worldwide.

ISWA has just announced its campaign, ‘The decade of wind propulsion.’ The Association is a forum for all industry stakeholders, experts, academics and NGO supporters in the development of a windship sector to shape industry as well as government attitudes and policies.

Gavin has been ISWA’s Secretary General since 2014. He also sits on the ship efficiency subgroup of the European Sustainable Shipping Forum, led by the EC DG of Transport. He sits on the stakeholders’ advisory committee of the IMO Maritime Technologies Cooperation Centres Programme, and he is a Non-Executive Board Member of the World Wind Energy Association.

Gavin holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development, specialising in small-scale sustainable shipping and logistics in developing countries. He has contributed to numerous studies and projects on alternative propulsion solutions and helped coordinate and contributed extensively to the UN-affiliated International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) technical brief – Renewable Energy Options in Shipping.
