More than fifty people have died of suspected ‘oil-pollution' related causes in Fanjak.

Gatkouth Loat Joar, a Member of Parliament representing Jonglei state, says fifty-six deaths mostly children and the elderly, were recorded in the past two weeks, and occurred when oil pollution was worsened by flooding.  ASCOM, an oil and gas firm from Moldova was operating in the area but left after the 2013 conflict.

Gatkouth says an environmental impact assessment has not been conducted in the area since the petroleum firm stopped operations.

The MP is calling for an urgent investigation to avert a catastrophe.
