Eye Sight Testing for Drivers

Season 1, Episode 1041,   Dec 03, 2021, 10:00 AM

We all know how important it is to keep up with regular eye tests for spotting any changes in our vision and signs of any possible problems with our sight in the future before it happens.

Recent research by the College of Optometrists shows that a third of sighted drivers have not had their eyes tested specifically for driving, 1 in 10 admit to have not had their eyes tested at all and a quarter admit that when they are driving they are not waring their prescribed glasses or contact lenses which is illegal and could lead to a fine.

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey court up with Dr Paramdeep Bilkhu from the College of Optometrists to find out more about this research and what we can all do to make sure that our sighted family and friends do keep up with their regular eye tests and make sure they wear their glasses and contact lenses when driving.

Dr Paramdeep Bilkhu explained to Toby why the research was carried out, the findings of the research, the difference if any between a normal eye sight test and one specifically for driving.

Paramdeep also outlined what drivers should be looking out for to indicate that their eyes might need testing and what we should do if we know someones eyes are not as good as they have been for driving and how to broach the subject with family and friends.
