World Press Freedom Day - South Sudan

South Sudan remains at the bottom of the list in the World Press Freedom index published annually by Reporters without borders. In 2016 a Media Regulatory Authority was launched in the country to oversee the media industry. It was hoped that the Media Authority would contribute to a vibrant independent and pluralistic media by reducing the number of harassment incidents affecting journalist and ending impunity on crimes against journalists as well as creating an enabling environment for the media to operate in. Even though no journalist has been killed while on duty since its formation, Journalist continue do their work in fear of potential arrests, intimidation, and harassment.
