SRSG Haysom: The environment needs peace and peace needs environmental action

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General is encouraging partnerships between the national government and local communities to rebuild and preserve the country’s environment.
Nicholas Haysom says sustained, collective action is needed - led by the government and supported by donors, and regional and international partners, one of which is the United Nations.
Mr. Haysom stresses that environmental protection can only take place under the right conditions, one of which includes security.
The Special Representative says protecting the country’s diverse flora, fauna, landscapes, and natural resources should be seen as a long-term strategic objective.
