Fourteen years for murdering a policeman. That was the sentence handed down to one of Stephen Carroll's killer's yesterday. Constable Carroll was the first member of the PSNI to be killed by dissident republicans. He died just 48 hours after two soldiers were shot dead by the Real IRA at an army base in Antrim. At the time of the murder the Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for the killing. John Paul Wootton, who was 17 at the time of the murder, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years to be served before he is considered for parole. Brendan McConville will serve a minimum of 25 years for the murder. Lord Justice Paul Girvan who sentenced the men said terrorism has been "wholly rejected, as demonstrated by the will of the people" and that any sentence had to reflect the "need for deterrence". Speaking outside court Kate Carroll, Stephen's widow, said she was disgusted at the term.
