Forgotten landscapes 1

Composition by Matthew Zook.

"I was inspired by all aspects of the original sample and after working with the sound I discovered interesting textures and colors emerging from all moments of the sample.

"Considering the subject matter of the project, Obsolete Sounds, I wanted to create a soundscape that represented an abandoned civilization, now overcome by nature, frozen in time and "obsolete" to humans. The piece was created using various treatments of the transmission belt sample, prepared guitar improvisations, traditional bamboo flutes from China and India and field recordings from where I live in the Palouse region of Washington state, USA and from the Kootenay region of British Columbia, CAN.

"I hope the listener can go on a journey and travel through a mental landscape of their own creation as they absorb the piece. Much thanks and appreciation to Stuart Fowkes for his website and opportunities he provides for musicians, composers and listeners alike!"

This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world’s biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Explore the whole project at https://citiesandmemory.com/obsolete-sounds
