D-ROSE VS. JA - THE REAL & THE FAKE

Episode 10,   May 22, 2023, 01:00 PM

Derrick Rose and Ja Morant are similar on the basketball court but come from very different backgrounds. Ja seems to want to run toward the background D-Rose is trying to leave behind because the media makes it look so cool. This episode discusses how the black community can help Ja and young men like him realize their greatness and not fall for the allure of street life.

Everything from movies and TV shows, social media and music, all of it paints the picture that young black men are all violent and gangsters. And all this exposure influences many black kids into feeling as if they need to be what the media is portraying as cool and powerful.

That's where I think Ja Morant is - an exciting NBA player who grew up in a positive family environment is acting like someone he's not, posting videos and threatening people on social media, and potentially jeopardizing millions of dollars from the NBA and endorsements because of his actions.

In this episode, I contrast Ja with Derrick Rose. They play similar styles on the court but they couldn't be from more different backgrounds. Derrick actually grew up in one of the poorest and toughest neighborhoods in the United States and he's talked about the trauma he's had to carry into adulthood.

Finally, I discuss why so many black kids want to live a life they know nothing about and should want no part of, and provide recommendations on what the black community can do to help these kids stay on the right track.
