Welcome to the Murphy River Walk.

The River Walk takes you through a variety of natural environments that happen to surround the historic town center. The trail follows the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers, passing through open meadows, marshy wetlands, hardwood forests, and around a rock cliff. Constructed with respect for the natural environment and its wide array of native plants and wildlife, the nearly three miles of trails are a joy to experience.

Trailheads and parking are available at several locations along the trail. The two most popular and easy-to-find trailheads are located at the Louisville and Nashville Depot and at Konehete Veterans Park. Other trailheads can be found at McClelland Street, Valley River Avenue, and the end of Hilton Street. You cannot get lost, but maps are available at information boxes located at the Louisville and Nashville Depot, McClelland Street, and Valley River Avenue trailheads. You can also pick up a map at the Tourist Information Office on Tennessee Street in town.

Every day is a great day to enjoy the River Walk. Certain parts of the trail are seasonal. When the lake and rivers rise in the summer, the Cypress Loop may be covered with water, but the upper trail remains high and dry. Other wetland areas stay accessible year-round thanks to raised wooden walkways.

As you walk along the trail, you will find several of our new audio tour stations. Just use your smartphone to scan the QR code on each station’s signpost to hear interesting stories, histories, and legends from our area. These stories will enrich your experience and help you learn more about our region’s rich history.

Although Murphy has only been an incorporated town for a little over 175 years, humans have lived in this area for more than 11,000 years. Our history runs deep, and we hope you take the time to hear our stories as you enjoy the trail!
