Much of the low-lying land along these rivers is classified as wetlands.
Wetlands are areas that are saturated or covered with water for at least part of the year. The areas along the River Walk that are classified as wetlands include the Cypress Loop and Fisherman’s Loop trails.
Wetlands are an important part of our natural environment, and protecting them is essential to maintaining a healthy ecosystem in our region.
The role of wetlands as wildlife habitat has long been recognized. In North Carolina, more than 70 percent of the species listed as endangered or threatened depend on wetlands for their survival. Many other common species of waterfowl, fish, birds, mammals, and amphibians also rely on wetlands during critical stages of their lives.
These river bottom wetlands provide abundant food, nesting sites, resting areas, and shelter for many wildlife species. Many fish use the flooded areas for spawning and feeding.
Our wetlands also offer opportunities for birdwatching, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and photography. Without these wetlands, the area would have far less wildlife diversity and would be a much less interesting place to visit.
