"Arts Alive" w/ Bill DeYoung 4-27-24; Karla Hartley and Heather Krueger: Stageworks Theatre

Episode 7466,   Apr 27, 03:21 PM

Stageworks Theatre’s dynamic creative duo, Karla Hartley (Producing Artistic Director) and Heather Krueger (Operations Manager) are today’s guests on the Arts Alive! podcast, to talk about the Tampa professional playhouse’s new show, Our Town.

Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and has become one of the most-seen American dramas in stage history. Both Hartley (who’s directing) and Krueger (stage managing) discuss the universal themes explored within the confines of Wilder’s small town – Grovers Corners, New Hampshire – and why they continue to resonate down through the generations.

The three-act play centers on two families, and in keeping with the times, some of the “at-home” dialogue for one family will be spoken in Spanish, the other in Haitian Creole.

During these sections, English translations will be projected over the stage.

The rest remains in spoken English.

“Nothing about the play has changed,” Hartley explains. “No words in the play have changed – they’re simply in a different language. And we’re definitely living in a time where we need to broaden our perspectives about what theater can be, about what community can be.”
