In this thought-provoking episode, Scott delves into the impact of buried emotions on relationships and the phenomenon of codependency, particularly in the context of helpers, teachers, and therapists. As current science indicates, much codependency stems from buried anger. Scott shares that when helpers help people from unconsciousness due to emotional repression, they may unintentionally perpetuate cycles of codependency through, as Barbara Oakley states, pathological altruism. This, in fact, can happen even when a helper believes that they are legitimately alleviating the suffering of another. He emphasizes that authentic compassion is a desire to alleviate suffering, but without unconsciously trying to get one's needs met. This may include addressing any remaining unconscious needs from childhood within the helping relationship, which becomes part of the awakening and/or healing process for both the helper and the one being helped. Join Scott as he unpacks these intriguing concepts and challenges listeners to reflect on the dynamics of helping relationships.
