In this episode of Sounds of Healing with Alvinette Downing, she talks to Dr. Barbara Grazul Hubbard - Dean for Humanities and Fine Arts at St. Petersburg College and the creative director of The Right Brain Workshop- and Nathan Muehl Associate Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at SPC where he also serves as music director and Director of Bands. They talk about the Alvin Downing Exhibit at SPC Gibbs Campus and founder of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association https://www.aldowningjazz.com; Alvinette is the current president. (FYI The Monday Jazz Jam at The Hangar Restaurant 7-9 in downtown St. Pete is legendary.) Her father was a professor at SPC and his memorabilia and music are in an exhibit the college has created to  honor his legacy as a professor, musician and Tuskegee Airman. They talk about how music helps students in the community through difficult times, new arts/music projects coming up at SPC and advice for aspiring musicians and educators who want to use music as a force for positive change. 
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT The Al Downing exhibit at St. Petersburg College honors the life of Al Downing, a musician, educator, and community leader. The exhibit includes memorabilia such as original music scores, recordings, photos, and mementos. The exhibit is located in the Humanities (HS) Building at the SPC Gibbs Campus. 
ABOUT AL DOWNING  Downing was a pianist and saxophonist who taught at SPC. He was a Tuskegee Airman in World War II. He was the first African American Commissioner of the St. Petersburg Housing Authority. He was the first African American to play in the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. He formed the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association in the 1980s.
