In this episode of Gardening with Florida, host Nanette Wiser chats with Domenico
Pontoriero , president of historic Roser Park Neighborhood Association about their Jasmine Terrace Ocean Friendly Garden. They will break ground on April 26 @10 am and are still looking for donors and funding for some of the hardscaping.  Says Dom: "There is an empty lot in my neighborhood that was often used as a dumping ground for large furniture and appliances (think ovens, water heaters, mattresses, etc). I made it my mission to find a way to turn it into something positive for the community. It's on the corner of 10th Ave S and Jasmine Terrace.  I discovered that the lot was owned by the city and was part of an abandoned project to widen the roads which, for whatever reason never happened and will never happen because the city sold parts of the land to property owners for construction. The lot was too small for most applications like a dog park or a playground. One of my neighbors suggested a very new concept: the ocean friendly garden, promoted by the nonprofit Surfrider. The concept is pretty simple: establish a garden of native plants to help mitigate algae blooms by allowing native plants to absorb runoff without the need for fertilizers or irrigation that contribute to ocean pollutants."
