In this episode of MUSIC SCENE, host Nanette Wiser talks with legendary percussionist and master class instructor Dimas Sanchez about Afro-Cuban-Latin music. On Sunday, June 22 @3p at The Palladium in downtown St. Pete the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association presents Afro Latin Jazz Party! featuring Dimas Sanchez and the Afro Latin Jazz Project. The event is co-sponsored by Mi Gente Mi Pueblo, a local nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure that all Latinx communities are visible, thriving, and connected. TICKETS here

ABOUT THE ARTIST Puerto Rico-born drummer and percussionist Dimas Sanchez has enjoyed a musical journey shaped by mentors such as Tony Sánchez, Keith Copeland, Ignacio Berroa, and Ángel “Cachete” Maldonado. In the 1980s, Sanchez delved into the rich traditions of Afro-Puerto Rican folklore under the guidance of Jesús Cepeda, Petra Cepeda and Don Rafael Cepeda. His musical repertoire spans performing and producing Latin Jazz recordings with Eddie “GuaGua” Rivera’s “Opus Mundi,” his own group “Fusion Beat,” and his latest project, the “Afro Latin Jazz Project.” In addition to performing, Dimas is a dedicated educator, frequently conducting percussion clinics and master classes.
