Sunday will be June 1, and June is Pride Month around the country, and so it logically follows that St. Pete Pride is about to kick off its biggest month of the year.
Pride President Byron Green-Calisch guests today on Arts Alive!, and together we go through not only the entire month of events (parade and festival day is June 28, for those who can’t wait) but the reasons St. Pete Pride, and the Pride movement itself, exists.
Although it celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community, Green-Calisch stresses the bigger picture is all about inclusion.
“We welcome everybody to experience the joy of resistance,” he says during our interview. “That showing up, and being around like-minded people, and really soaking up the beautifulness that is the diversity of this community, is joy-inciting. I invite people to come and experience that.
“You’re going to meet people that you’ve never met. You’re going to engage with difference. You’re going to see people that may dress in ways that you’ve never considered dressing, or say anything different from your own life experience.
“But it’s in that beauty that you realize that we are all human. We all have this desire to live in a way that is joyous.”
