Many of you will know Steve from his valuable contribution to the TAVIP Discussion List, and from his involvement in the sector over many years, but here is a quick intro from him:

“I have been working in the field of accessibility training and provision of goods for the blind since 1996, after having been made redundant from an insurance company. I work for my own company, Computer Room Services Ltd, with my wife Angie, who is also blind, and Debbie, my support worker.

I am totally blind and have been playing with computer technology since about 1981, when my first computer was a Texas Instruments TI99-4A. This had a speech synthesiser mainly for gaming, but a friend of mine, who is sighted but into coding, wrote me a little screen reader for it. Then I was introduced to Vocal-Eyes from GW Micro and Hal from Dolphin. And the rest, as they say, is history. I got hooked on tech of all kinds.

The Masterclass will be an introduction to Android and Talkback, the built-in screen reader. We also make some generic comparisons between Android and iOS, the two main operating systems, and talk about the benefits of various Android phones such as those from Google, Samsung and Sony.

We may also talk about other screen readers on Android, including Prudence and CSR (Commentary Screen Reader) and talk about Google’s AI platform called Gemini.
