Even fully vaccinated people can contract COVID-19, leading to breakthrough cases. This doesn't mean vaccines aren't effective; they significantly reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Older adults and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk for severe breakthrough cases. Additional vaccine doses are recommended for eligible groups. Other precautions like mask-wearing, hand hygiene, avoiding crowds, and improving ventilation remain important. Symptoms of breakthrough cases are generally milder. Between Oct 31-Nov 6, 2021, Oregon reported 6,776 COVID-19 cases, with 29% being breakthrough cases.
