The Omicron variant, identified on Nov. 26, 2021, is more transmissible than the Delta variant and has mutations that may impact vaccine effectiveness. Its rapid spread in South Africa and mutations in the spike protein, which current vaccines target, are major concerns. Variants emerge due to the virus mutating in areas with low vaccination rates, often caused by vaccine inequity (lack of access, resources, or distrust). As long as parts of the world remain unvaccinated, new variants will emerge. To protect ourselves, continue current COVID-19 precautions: get vaccinated/boosted, wear masks indoors/crowded outdoors, maintain physical distance, wash hands, and avoid large crowds. Local vaccine events: Dec. 11, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Latino Network (312 SE 165th, Portland); Dec. 14, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Highland Haven (7600 NE Glisan Street, Portland); Dec. 14, 2-8 p.m. at Lloyd Center (1260 Lloyd Center, Portland).
