Omicron's impact on vaccine effectiveness against severe infection is being studied, but booster doses appear to offer better protection. Vaccination is the best defense. For infants, research on Omicron's risks is ongoing; 1% of admissions in those under 4 resulted in death, but the small sample size makes interpretation unclear.
To protect children, follow COVID-19 protocols: masking, social distancing, hand sanitizing, avoiding crowds, and healthy eating. Keep children's shots up to date. Specific solutions for children regarding Omicron are still being researched. Data on Omicron's transmissibility and specifics are expected soon from the WHO.
For holidays, get vaccinated if eligible. Protect your family by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, social distancing, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces. Omicron is highly contagious and reduces vaccine effectiveness, but full vaccination largely protects against severe disease.
Local vaccine events: Lloyd Center on Dec. 21 (2-8 p.m.), Dec. 28 (2-8 p.m.), and Dec. 30 (8 a.m.-2 p.m.). Highland Haven on Dec. 28 (9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.). More events at multco.us/vaccineclinics.
