SUNKEN GARDENS w/ Jennifer Tyson: On Saturday, June 28, all are welcome to learn more on a pollinator walk through the gardens from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m. We’ll highlight our favorite native wildflowers and the native butterflies, bees, and other imperiled pollinators that depend on them. See how you can use wildflowers to create a resilient landscape to rewild your garden or patio with “real Florida” style.  This Pollinator Walk is free with Gardens admission or membership and will be held outside. No pre-registration required. Learn more here.
THE STORY Did you know that Florida has over 300 types of bees, and most of them don’t sting, make honey or even have hives! They are also better at pollinating crops than honeybees! In fact, our native bees need our help much more than honeybees that hail from Europe.  Many American bees are solitary, creating single nests for their offspring in the ground or in hollow plant stems. Bare soil patches and dead plant stems are critically needed shelter, which is yet another reason to relax on garden clean-up. Native bees depend on the regional wildflowers they evolved with to survive, which is why we incorporate them into our tropical plantings – and you can, too!
