In this episode of Historically St Pete, Executive Director Rui Farias (St. Petersburg Museum of History SPMOH) talks to Ed Austin, a Rowdies legend and they talk about the team's colorful history. Ed Austin was a member of the original 1975 Tampa Bay Rowdies (after playing for the Cosmos) and Farias worked with him in his role as marketing/PR in the Rowdies front office. A childhood soccer fan who missed only two of the Rowdies games growing up, Farias went to journalism school and covered the Rowdies for the St. Petersburg Times before working for the Rowdies for eight years.
Says Farias "The Rowdies played a successful indoor season in the St. Pete
Bayfront Center, and then turned its attention outdoors. Tampa Stadium, the old “Sombrero” was a fortress for the Rowdies in the 1970s. They played their first game there in 1975. Just a few months later, in their first season, the Rowdies would defeat
the Portland Timbers in nationally televised Soccer Bowl ’75. And Ed Austin was part of that triumph!" Tune in for the rest of this story!

Historically St. Pete is a weekly conversation where Farias explore the truths - and sometimes the myths - of the people and events that created the St. Petersburg. The museum has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 103 years.
