In this episode of GOOD DEEDS, host Nanette Wiser talks with Dr. Shelby Thomas, Ph.D founder and CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance International | 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project. A native Floridian, this respected scientist and researcher has some innovative ideas and is a steward of the ocean, protecting and resuscitating coral reefs and creating sustainable artificial reefs to support clean water and thriving marine life. Adding art and engaging public experiences to artificial reef structures in Hollywood Beach is part of her vision, and she has an amazing idea for Champa Bay!
The Ocean Rescue Alliance Intl. (ORAI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring marine ecosystems, protecting coastlines, and engaging communities through innovative science, art, and engineering. We design and deploy functional artificial reefs that serve as living infrastructure to support biodiversity, enhance coastal resilience, restore marine environments and inspire ocean stewardship. They recently completed a historic deployment of 50 artificial reef structures off the coast of Hollywood Beach, Florida, as part of our Guardians of the Reef initiative. This project includes 16 unique sculpture reefs that merge art, education, and habitat restoration creating a nearshore snorkel park that is drawing marine life, tourists, and community engagement.
