In this episode of Historically St. Pete, Rui Farias - the executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History talks about prohibition and booze in the sunshine city and an upcoming event at the museum August 9. Says Rui: "But the debate of alcohol in St. Petersburg began far before 1980 when Florida changed the drinking age from 18 to 19, or when the City of St .Pete annexed the land Dave’s Aqua Lounge occupied on Gandy Blvd, ending everyone’s favorite 2am liquor store drive-up window. It actually started in 1892." Try and find a parking spot on Central Avenue on a Friday or Saturday night and you’ll see it obvious that the 1920s era party is alive and well in St. Petersburg. And even the Museum of History is keeping the Great Gatsby vision alive. Their quarterly History in a Bottle is presented by St. Pete Distillery and Sharon Mahoney of Events by Glass. Your ticket takes you on a two-hour journey of spirits tasting and a gourmet food tasting all wrapped in a history lesson. Their next History in a Bottle is Saturday, August 9 when we present: Aged & Distilled – A History Whiskey Journey. A tasting of fine whiskeys match with fine cuisine from Chives Catering and Perry’s Porch."
