Many working in radio have a recurring nightmare. You are on-air and everything conspires against you. You wake up in a sweat.
For a journalist or news announcer, that nightmare is of a bulletin where all the audio and scripts are wrong, or fail to appear, and you have to blunder your way through.
Occasionally, exactly that happens. Witness John Marsh reading the Radio 2 news in Sarah Kennedy's programme at dawn one July morning in 2010. It all goes Royally awry. But just hear how beautifully he handles it. It could have been simply embarrassing; but here is a composed pro in delicious action, with Sarah in a supporting role.
