MUSIC SCENE Host Nanette Wiser likes to celebrate all the venues, big and small, that showcase music around Tampa Bay. Perhaps one of the most iconic is The Floridian Social, so we chatted with owner Kevin Chadwick about this magnificently transformed historical theater where events and musical magic rule the stage. Kevin grew up in St. Pete, and recalls that The State Theater was one of five downtown single screen cinemas in the day, and popular for weekend dates in high school.  Where timeless elegance meets modern luxury, The Floridian is the place to plan a dream wedding reception, a festive holiday party, or a polished corporate gathering, Floridian Social offers a stunning, versatile space right here in the heart of Florida. It's like walking into a Great Gatsby movie scene, complete with sparkling chandeliers, velvet chaises, VIP alcoves on either side of the bar and a recently remodeled mezzanine that overlooks all the action. During the recent St. Pete Life Magazine Best of the Best party in July, 200 sophisticated ladies and gents mingled in the gorgeous room, nibbling delights from Il Ritorno and enjoying DJ Ali and Seminole High's own Angie Rey on stage, straight from her season on The Voice, cover girls of the recent issue. The Floridian Social host Sunday night jazz 6-9pm with The Crew - Jazz band, often featuring John C. O'Leary III, PhD, Alejandro Arenas, James Suggs, Jean Bolduc, and Bryan J Hughes, as well as special guests.  Tune in for more of my conversation with Kevin Chadwick.
HISTORY
Tracing its roots to 1924, The Floridian Social is an esteemed special events hall and live music venue situated in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. The building, with its rich and varied past, has been meticulously restored to honor its historical significance while providing a contemporary space for modern culture. Originally constructed as the Alexander National Bank, the site has also served as an office building, a movie theater, and most recently, the much-loved concert hall known as The State Theatre. This Art Deco-style building, with its distinctive architectural details, stands as a testament to the city’s evolving cultural landscape. Today, The Floridian Social thrives as a premier destination for a wide range of special events.
The recent restoration, skillfully executed by renowned architect Jack Bodziak, has breathed new life into the historic structure. Bodziak’s vision and expertise ensured that the building’s unique character was preserved while modern amenities were seamlessly integrated. His work has transformed The Floridian Social into a vibrant platform where the old meets the new, and history blends seamlessly with contemporary creativity.
The Floridian Social is more than just a venue; it is a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of St. Petersburg. By preserving its historical roots and embracing modern culture, it offers a unique and enriching experience for all who visit.
