Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where we explore the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Host Rui Farias is the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Located on the St. Pete Pier, the Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 102 years, and now we’re happy to share them you.
ST. PETERSBURG HIGH SCHOOL It's back to school, and Rui Farias spent many years teaching high school history. One Pinellas school is preparing to celebrate a major birthday this year. St. Petersburg High School is turning 100 years old. Well, the 5th Avenue campus is 100, St. Pete High is much older than that! St. Pete High’s history runs deeper than the 5th Avenue campus. That site is not the first home of the Green Devils – it is the fourth. Founded in 1898, the high school was part of the Graded School, near the current location of City Hall. As the city’s population grew, a one-building schoolhouse was not going to cut it. In 1910 a new building was constructed across the street and in 1911 a new St. Petersburg High School opened across the street from City Hall, in the middle of what is now 2nd Avenue North. Also where the red chairs are - 2nd Avenue didn’t go all the way through at the time. It did not take long for the city to outgrow that neo-Classical structure. A bigger St. Pete High was built on Mirror Lake Drive in 1919. The 2nd Avenue campus eventually becomes the first home of St. Petersburg Junior College – the first Junior College in the state of Florida by the way. TUNE IN for the rest of this story!
