In this episode of Gardening in Florida, host Nanette Wiser suggests stepping out of the summer heat and focusing on indoor houseplants with tips on what's best for your lighting, grow lights, watering and soil suggestions. Some plants help clean the air (nature's hepa filter) and all greenery provides serenity for the soul! If you have pets, be sure to ask your vet or do some research on plants that might be dangerous to their health.
Light: Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light, so avoid placing them in direct, harsh sunlight. You may need to supplement with grow lights if natural light is insufficient.
Watering Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Consider using a moisture meter to help gauge soil moisture.
Soil and Potting Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating.
Humidity Some plants benefit from increased humidity. You can achieve this by grouping plants together, using a pebble tray, or misting them regularly.
Air Circulation Good airflow helps prevent fungal diseases and pests. Use fans or open windows to circulate air, especially during warmer months.
Fertilizing Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
Cleaning Clean leaves regularly to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
Pest Control Inspect plants regularly for pests and treat them promptly with appropriate solutions.
Pruning Remove dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves and stems to encourage new growth and improve air circulation.
Repotting Repot plants when they become root-bound or when the soil is depleted.
Temperature Maintain a consistent temperature, avoiding drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Rotation Rotate plants regularly to ensure even growth.
