Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where we explore the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. My name is Rui Farias and I have the best job in town – the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History.  This week's guest is the Museum's new archives and collections manager Jess Steere.
Located on the St. Pete Pier, the Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 103 years, and now we’re happy to share them you.  The St. Pete Museum of History fills a much bigger role for the community than just opening our doors for visitors to explore fantastic exhibits about our city’s history, and of course our 3,000 year old Egyptian mummy. I think our biggest role is how we collect and protect the area’s rich history. For about 100 years of our existence, the St. Petersburg Historical Society, the non-profit that runs the Museum of History, has been on its own. Yes, we couldn’t have collected over 100,000 artifacts, maps, photos and such without the help of our membership, donors and supporters. Two years ago Mayor Welch and the City Council recognized the importance of our work here and helped. Without their support, we wouldn’t have able to expand our resources to better protect St. Pete’s history, and help community protect and their own history.
