In this episode of Book Talk, host Margo Hammond interviews Jon Wilson about his new book, "Helpless at the Gates of Graceland."
Jon Wilson is a local journalist and author best known for his non-fiction books about St. Petersburg’s history, especially its African-American communities. Born in Scottsbluff, a farming community in Nebraska, he has lived in St. Petersburg since 1956. He worked as a reporter and editor for 37 years for the St. Petersburg Times and Evening Independent, and 11 years for Florida Humanities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degrees in Journalism Studies and in Liberal Arts from USF-St Petersburg. In 2021, Mayor Rick Kriseman gave Wilson a Key to the City of St. Petersburg, citing his inclusive chronicling of the city’s history. His books include Days of Fear: A Lynching in St. Petersburg with Jane McNeil, The Golden Era in St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg's Historic 22nd Street South with Rosalie Peck and St. Petersburg's Historic African American Neighborhoods. He has also penned a cracker Western called Bridger’s Run. His latest book is also a book of fiction, a collection of short stories entitled Helpless at the Gates of Graceland, illustrated by Justin Groom and published by St. Petersburg Press.
