Sunken Gardens' Jennifer Tyson shares events and news for October. Did you know that October is Florida Native Plant Month? It’s also the perfect time to plant wildflowers or sow seeds for spring germination, as many need the cooler
weather to thrive. Native plants typically require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides than non-native species. Whether you only have space for a container plant or plan to create your dream garden, native plants are a valuable addition to any landscape.
Fall is also the time to cut back tropical milkweed for Monarchs, or better yet, remove it altogether. It has been proven to be harmful to monarchs, and now deemed invasive, so it’s better to replace it with native milkweed that dies back in the fall to prompt many populations to migrate to Mexico and avoid our cold
snaps. So, what to plant instead? Fall blooming native wildflowers like blazing star liatris, goldenrod, and asters are important nectar sources for fuel on their long fall migration. If you would rather skip the milkweed altogether, you will still be supporting them in a pivotal way! Real Florida gardeners avoid the lifeless fall mums sold in big box stores and buy for pollinators instead. Sunken Gardens incorporates native plants throughout our tropical garden to attract and support butterflies,
bees, birds, and other wildlife. These events are free with Gardens admission or membership and will be held outside. No pre- registration required.
