St. Petersburg is known world-wide for its art community, its cultural
institutions, its ever rapidly growing world-class restaurants, its sandy-white
beaches and 362 days of sunshine each year. But before a Dali, Grazzie, or SHINE arrived, heck even before the city's first publicist John Lodwick began inventing activities that led to the birth of this thing called tourism in Florida, St. Pete had become known for its beauty, more specifically, its magnificent waterfront parks. The protections of the city’s waterfront parks became enshrined in St. Pete’s City Charter – our city constitution if you will. Any alterations or changes to our waterfront parks must go through referendum. Which means the people of St. Petersburg decide, like for instance, doing away with Al Lang Stadium. And you know how we love our waterfront parks. Thirteen years ago, the waterfront parks got some help. In 2012 the Downtown Waterfront Parks Foundation was founded with the mission to support and advocate for the preservation and enhancement of the historic waterfront parks.
