In this episode of Good Deeds, host Nanette Wiser chats with Florida native and St. Pete resident Michelle Cevolo who is competing to be the Face of Halloween 2025 winner and raise money for her chosen charity, Starlight Children's Foundation. Says Michelle: "The non-profit helped my sister Rachel when she was hospitalized at five years old, and Michelle has never forgotten their kindness. Stacy's visits became a fixture of our hospital stay. She brought laughter and new coloring books and painted a picture of a world beyond the sterile one we were living in. I was no longer a ghost watching from the doorway. I was a part of the fun, an honorary "Starlight Cadet" who helped Stacy with her mission. For a few stolen hours each day, the hospital faded away. The beeping monitors became background noise, and the fear was replaced by the pure, undiluted joy of a sister playing with her sibling.
As Rachel’s infection finally began to recede, her laughter grew stronger. The doctors called it a miracle, but I knew it was more. It was the power of a child's imagination, given a lifeline by a Starlight Captain and a big box of crayons. The Starlight Children's Foundation didn't just distract Rachel; they gave her a reason to fight. They reminded her that she was still a kid, a queen of a messy, beautiful universe that was hers to paint and to rule. And for a family held captive by fear, that smile—that one glorious, messy, paint-splashed smile—was everything."
GOOD DEEDS:  For Michelle, volunteering and giving back to the community is a year-round act of kindness. She is an HIV/STD Testing and Counseling Volunteer | Florida Department of Health in Orlando and St. Pete and educates community members on health risks and resources. She also is a Curator & Lead Organizer, Annual Community Events | St. Vincent de Paul Homeless Shelter |
