Many stories have been written about the graying of Japan’s population accompanied by much kvetching over the cost to the younger gen of maintaining the old. Well, here’s a story that should put the kibosh on those complaints once and for all. A group of elders has volunteered to clean up the reactors damaged by the tsunami and earthquake. Calling itself the Skilled Veteran Corps, the group consists of engineers and other specialists over 60 who are able—and willing – to do a job that is kitanai, and kiken: dirty and hazardous. They insist that, really, they’re the logical choice because they’ll suffer less from the effects of the radiation on account of their age. So hurray for the gray. They’re old. They’re bold.
